Abortion Increases Risk of Subsequent Miscarriage, UK Study Shows
Researchers in the U.K. have published a study showing that women who have had a previous abortion are more likely to miscarry during a subsequent pregnancy.
The researchers surveyed women about their reproductive histories, lifestyles and relationships and compared data from 603 women who suffered a miscarriage in the first trimester from 6,116 women whose pregnancies progressed beyond the first trimester. The women surveyed were between the ages of 18 and 55.
The study found a number of factors were associated with first-trimester miscarriage, including regular or high alcohol consumption during pregnancy, stress, co-habitation or changing partners during pregnancy, assisted reproduction techniques such as in-vitro fertilization, low body weight in the mother, higher age for the woman or her partner, and previous infertility, miscarriage, or induced abortion. Having a previous live birth, taking vitamin supplements during pregnancy and eating well were all associated with a decreased risk of miscarriage.
According the study, which was published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, women who had a previous abortion had a 60 percent higher risk of miscarriage. The lead author, Dr. Noreen Manocochie of London's School of Hygiene and Topical Medicine, told reporters, "The findings related to low pre-pregnancy weight, previous termination, stress and change of partner are noteworthy, and we suggest further work be initiated to confirm these findings in other study populations."
Previous studies have found that women with a history of abortion were more likely to experience a subsequent miscarriage and that having more than one abortion further increased the risk. Abortion has also been associated with other pregnancy-related problems such as ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and premature birth, which is the leading cause of birth defects. According to a paper published in 2003 in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, 49 studies have demonstrated a statistically significant increase in premature births among women who have previously had an abortion.

Signature Ad Brings Hope for Those Hurt by Unwanted, Coerced Abortions
Is your church, pro-life group, or post-abortion healing ministry planning a signature ad for January? Our "Unchoice" signature ad highlights coerced and unwanted abortions while bringing a message of healing and hope to those struggling with the pain of an unwanted or regretted abortion. This is a beautiful way to (1) raise awareness about coerced, unwanted, or uninformed abortions and post-abortion trauma, (2) expose abortion's harm to everyone involved, including those it was supposed to help, (3) express your concern over the pressures and obstacles women face, and (4) open the door to healing for the 50 million women and men who have lost a child to abortion.
The ad can be run as a signature ad or a stand-alone display ad without signatures. It also includes space to advertise an upcoming event such as a rally, speaker, informational meeting, or healing program. You can view and download the ad at www.unfairchoice.info/display4.htm. New Products Educate Others, Spread Hope
Spread the Word With the Unchoice Bumper Sticker
A forced choice is not a fair choice. An uninformed or deceptively presented choice is not a real choice. Maybe it's time we stopped calling abortion a "choice!" Please help us break this deceptive, but widely held stereotype. Let women know that we see the injustice and understand their loss, while also swaying Americans who tolerate abortion in the name of "choice." If they knew the truth, they would never condone -- much less encourage -- abortion for their family and friends.
You can see the new bumper sticker at www.cafepress.com/unchoice. Also, watch for new T-shirts, bumper stickers and other merchandise you can use to help expose the well-marketed myth of "choice." By erasing this assumption, we can free women and others injured by abortion to find support and healing, and to speak out against abortion without fear of misjudgment or condemnation. One bumper sticker features the web site address -- www.UnChoice.info -- and another (coming soon) will feature the new logo. Please share this urgent message and help open the floodgates of healing.
Great Gift Idea -- Consider These Gifts of Blessing and Hope
Looking for the perfect gift? Give them a "blessing" (Numbers 6:24-26) printed on an attractive ornament that will continue to bless your family and friends for years to come. Pass on a blessing to others with the Christmas Blessing Ornament, Blessing Framed Tile, or elegant Blessing Keepsake Tile Box -- an ideal place to store memories, mementos, special photos or messages. You can also add an encouraging bible verse, poem, news clipping, inspirational quotes, a religious article such as a rosary or cross, jewelry, a favorite family recipe, or other meaningful enclosures. This personalizing touch makes it a unique and special gift they'll treasure for years to come. If you know someone who is experiencing a loss, this can brighten their holiday with the blessing of encouragement and hope.
The special Healing Journey Journal is another meaningful gift idea. It provides a place to record memories, prayers, and thoughts, or to journal the healing process. The cover message reminds the recipient that "there is hope." The cover artwork features a broken heart that becomes partially, then fully healed. Personalize it by writing an encouraging note, scripture passage or favorite quote, or enclose a photograph, clipping or other meaningful enclosures. Include a nice pen for a finishing touch to your gift package.

Distribute Hope and Healing for Respect Life Sunday
"If your paper would have been available to me in college I would never have had an abortion." --Nancy
As we approach another year of commemorating the Supreme Court's tragic decision in Roe v. Wade, we remember the millions of hurting women and men who have experienced the trauma and abuse of abortion and the loss of their children — and those now facing crisis pregnancies. Hope and Healing, the Elliot Institute's 12-page newspaper insert on post-abortion issues and healing, is a perfect educational tool to expose the pain and suffering caused by abortion and let those struggling after a past abortion know they are not alone.
Please consider raising awareness of this vital message in your church or community by distributing Hope and Healing in your church information rack, newsletter or bulletin and at Respect Life events and pro-life marches and rallies this January. This publication will:
reduce the abortion rate by discouraging the notion that abortion is a good solution to a crisis pregnancy,
reduce the rate of unwanted abortions by helping those who would pressure women into abortion "for their own good" understand the long-term negative effects abortion will have on their loved ones,
help foster post-abortion healing by letting those struggling with a past-abortion know they are not alone and encourage them to seek help through a post-abortion ministry,
raise awareness of post-abortion issues and the need for healing,
help readers respond in an empathetic and understanding way to their loved ones who have experienced abortion, and
foster a positive pro-woman image of the pro-life community.
Hope and Healing is also ideal for running as a paid insert in your college, community, or local newspaper. You can take a look at Hope and Healing on our web site at www.afterabortion.info/hope/pageview.htm. A packet of 50 inserts is available for only $20 (U.S. shipping included), or ask about our low prices for bulk orders. To place an order or for more information, call 1-888-412-2676 or send an email to amy@afterabortion.info.
