Church Awareness Project Update

More than 300 people have now signed up for the Church Awareness Project!

In addition to sending copies of the Church Leader's Kit -- which includes a free electronic copy of the Jericho Plan and other educational materials -- we are also planning a special awareness event for churches.

The event would help churches raise awareness of unwanted and coerced abortions, the spiritual and emotional wounds caused by abortion, and the need for support for those who are at risk of abortion or have already been hurt by it. We especially want to encourage pastors and other church leaders to teach and preach on these issues.

So ... here's where you come in!

We want your ideas and thoughts about this event. What should we call it? What issues do you think need to be addressed in our churches? When should we hold it?

You can share your ideas with us by visiting our blog post and leaving comments. Or, if you are on Facebook, simply go to our Facebook page and let us know what you think there!

You can give us your feedback even if you haven't signed up to join the project (of course, you can still join the Church Awareness Project email list to get the latest news, information and resources about this project).

You can also get your family members, friends, fellow pro-lifers and others concerned about these issues to get involved too. Tell them about the Church Awareness Project and encourage them to join the project.

We look forward to getting lots of feedback from you!

Thank you for your help!

A Tidal Wave of Published Data

More Than 30 Studies in Last 5 Years Show Negative Impact of Abortion on Women

Priscilla Coleman, Ph.D.

On Sunday, November 7th, the Washington Post published an opinion by Dr. Brenda Major titled The Big Lie about Abortion and Mental Health. I would like to offer another perspective on dishonesty permeating the scientific study and dissemination of information pertaining to abortion and mental health.

Dr. Major is absolutely correct: an informed choice regarding abortion must be based on accurate information. For abortion providers to offer an unbiased and valid synopsis of the scientific literature on increased risks of abortion, the information must include depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), as well as suicide ideation and behaviors.

Disclosure and Coercion

Telling Women That "Post-Abortion Trauma
Is A Myth" Is A Form of Coercion

Melinda Tankard Reist

The article above reveals how abortion clinic staff, abortion advocates and even some professional medical and mental health organizations have concealed from women and the public scientific evidence that abortion negatively impacts women's mental health. In this excerpt from Giving Sorrow Words, women's rights advocate Melinda Tankard Reist discusses how concealing information about abortion risks is a form of coercion.

Concealing information relevant to a woman's decision-making and future health should be recognized as an act of coercion. Deceptive information presented as factfor example, that post-abortion trauma is a "myth" also acts coercively on a client.

If a woman has an abortion without having been apprised of the facts about potential harm and suffering, she has not chosen freely: the decision-making process has been rendered defective. The normal requirements for informed consent prior to undergoing a medical procedure should not be suspended when that procedure is a termination of pregnancy.

Download the GoodSearch Toolbar
to Help Us During the Holidays

Nearly 50 people responded to our request for help by downloading the GoodSearch Toolbar this month. If you were one of them, thank you so much! And to all of our supporters, there's still time to help us out by downloading the toolbar in time for Christmas and other holiday shopping!

Here's how it works: Each time you use the GoodSearch toolbar to search or shop online (at more than 1,500 stores, from Amazon to Zazzle!), a donation will be made to the Elliot Institute.

It doesn't cost you anything to download the toolbar, and you can continue using your regular browser and other toolbars. We have earned nearly $200 from GoodSearch so far in 2010, all thanks to people who are simply doing the things they usually do online.

To download the GoodSearch toolbar:

1. Click http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbar/elliot-institute
2. Download the Elliot Institute toolbar
3. Click "Share With Friends" on our toolbar download page so that others can get involved! (Or, invite others to get involved by simply copying and sending this request to others you know.)

Thank you for your support!
