Why it is important to make back-ups of your machines
Eisenkolb recently received a notification via the helpdesk (helpdesk@eisenkolb.com) about software failure on a PLS-2300.

Normally this customer works in the following way:
  • Customer-specific .txt files are generated from data out of a ERP system
  • The order numbers will be converted to barcodes and will be printed for the operator
  • With the help of a separate program, codes will be sent via the network to the PLS
  • The barcode is getting scanned by the operator
  • The PLS-software will look at the correct locations to find the codes/files and generates the cutting and marking files
What was the problem:
After scanning a barcode, following pop-up was showing;
“Run-time error ‘62’ input past end of file”

What was the cause of the problem:
The code(the .txt file) that had to be read by the PLS got corrupted.
The file was not recognized by the PLS software causing the error code. Probably the error in the customer-specific software caused the corrupt data being generated.

This is a practical example about what can go wrong if a problem with software/files arises.

How was the problem solved:
The customer-specific software and the corresponding files to generate the scanner have been reinstalled. This is done by using an available back-up, which has been critical to solve this matter.

Which Eisenkolb machines require having a good back-up of the software/files?
- PLS (former Mantec)
- PCS
- PUS
- ABS
- ATS
- ARS
- CCS

If specific software is used for example to make/send scanner files than it is also important to make a backup of this.

Attached you will find a document that explains very simply how to make a back-up.

It is also a possible to have Eisenkolb make a back-up for you. The machine needs to be connected with internet and TeamViewer has to be installed. We will also make a back-up of all settings of the machine.
