Subject: November: a Month of Graditude

Dear Farm Friends

We certainly had a wonderful October. Did you ever see such gorgeous foliage? It was beyond beautiful, and we hope you had a chance to see some of it during a visit to Flamig Farm or other outing.

And now we have November with the Thanksgiving Holiday. As you probably know It was 200 years between the Pilgrims celebrating with Native Americans and 1865 when President Abraham Lincoln named it a national holiday. And here is a fun fact you probably don't know:

In 1953, some frozen turkeys were taking up space in 10 refrigerated train cars when a company salesman suggested preparing and packaging the turkey with sides in compartmentalized aluminum trays. Swanson sold 5,000 TV dinners in that first year. The following year, 1954, they sold 10 million!

Hey, come visit us. Enjoy the brisk air, the animals,

and meet Nuggett and Stay Puff Marshmellow Man.(See below.)

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude. Did you know how valuable it is to our mental health (and to others) to be a grateful person? In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.

And before we list fun gratitude quotes for kids and family, here is our favorite:

"So it is not happiness that makes us grateful. It's gratefulness that makes us happy."

– David Steindl-Rast

Here are some fun and positive Thanksgiving quotes. Share one or two with family and friends:

Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns; I am thankful that thorns have roses.

— Alphonse Karr

Sometimes when you’re surrounded by dirt…you’re a better witness for what’s beautiful.

— Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña

When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.

— Willie Nelson

In life, one has a choice to take one of two paths: to wait for some special day–or to celebrate each special day.

— Rasheed Ogunlaru

A Great BIG Thank you.

We are grateful to all who attended our Halloween Walk Through and to the amazing, creative volunteers who helped make it happen. Actors and everyone who worked so hard to build,  coordinate staff and direct parking made a lot of fun for our friends all over the Farmington Valley who attended. Great job to all involved.

People keep asking if we are going to bring back our Halloweeen Hay Rides. Well, we had a pretty good 32 year run; yes, our first year was 1988. My how time flies! Covid rules made the ride in 2020 impossible. Well, not impossible but to maintain 6 foot spacing we could only put 6 people on a wagon. So that year we started the walk-through to enable 6 foot spacing.

One thing we learned that year is how 'freaking' stressful it was to put on the Halloweeen Hay Rides. Eight tractors and wagons running, 100 or so people in the woods, parking crew and all the other support staff that is required just seems a bit overwhelming at the moment.

Will we do it again? Time will tell.
