I'm about to get drunk.
Or lit as the kids call it.
Today and tomorrow I'm going to be at London's Nottinghill Carnival.
It started in the 1960s. The Caribbean immigrants wanted to celebrate their culture in their new home.
The first carnival happened to bring joy and show the Caribbean spirit.
There were steel drums, calypso music, and amazing outfits that lit up the streets.
As time passed, the carnival became more popular. People from different communities joined, making it a mix of cultures.
Everyone, no matter where they came from, danced together and felt united.
The carnival became important for celebrating differences. It taught us that we can all come together and enjoy what makes us special.
There were bright bands, lively beats, and amazing Caribbean food.
Every year I look forward to this day to party with millions of people in the street.
Even when the weather was shyt, the carnival didn't give up.
Neither did I, I have pictures of me drenched from torrential rain with a big grin on my face and a bottle of rum in my hand.
Nottinghill Carnival shows how powerful culture, unity, and joy are.
It reminds us that even in a busy city, people can have fun and understand each other.
Every year, the streets of Nottinghill fill with happiness. Telling a story of different backgrounds coming together.
The news media might paint a picture of violence and trouble but don't let that fool you. Yes, there are bad apples at every event in the world but it is far from the majority.
I've been going to Carnival every year for the last 18 years. Only missing it when it was closed due to the pandemic and the day my son was born.
And I have seen one fight.
Every time I've had the best day.
So if you ever get the chance. Go to Carnival, eat some great food and have fun.
You may even catch me dancing my ass off.
Enjoy your bank holiday.
Stay blessed.
Jouvan.
