History and Culture for Destination Westport: Black Stories

Westport Museum

Traverse downtown Westport and learn the hidden African American history of Westport, based on the Museum’s award-winning exhibit Remembered: The History of African Americans in Westport. Trained guides reveal the untold stories of the region’s Black community from colonial times through today. From enslaved people to soldiers, sailors, activists, artists, and respected citizens, this rich history is deeply explored through existing buildings and long destroyed sites.

Juneteenth Film Screening: How It Feels to be Free

In honor of Juneteenth, the library will be screening the PBS American Masters documentary, How It Feels To Be Free . How It Feels to Be Free is a documentary film about six legendary African American women performers and their engagement with the Black freedom struggle. This is the first film to focus on the unique contributions of female entertainers to that struggle, and to the related battle over representation in the mass media.

Westport Museum for History and Culture

Celebrate Juneteenth with a screening of the short documentary film The 29th Connecticut about the African American soldiers who enlisted in Connecticut during the American Civil War, specifically eleven men from Berlin. Enjoy refreshments afterwards while hearing more about the 13 men who enlisted from Westport and their contribution to the liberation of enslaved people on June 19th, 1865 in Galveston, Texas.

Come to the S.T.A.R's 3rd annual Juneteenth Community Celebration! Be prepared to be wowed by local band, The Misfits. Bring a picnic or buy super yummy soul food from Miss Thelma’s, VeganEats and ZLicious Caribbean Food. Join in to help create a community art piece with featured mixed media artist, Sharon Smalls Walton. While free to attend, they kindly ask that you register in advance so they have enough supplies!


Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth – short for June nineteenth – marks the anniversary of Union troops marching to announce the end of the Civil War and the freedom of all enslaved people. This year’s Juneteenth Celebration at Greenwich Historical Society will offer fun and learning for the whole family. Browse the curated market in the Tavern Garden, highlighting local businesses. Relax on the great lawn with lawn games and jazz music from the Demolition Brass Band. Enjoy a plate of delicious food from a local restaurant. Kids of all ages will enjoy educational crafts, a garden scavenger hunt and games. Adults and kids alike are invited to join in the community mural coloring spotlighting Black history in Greenwich.
