A Continuous Thread: Navajo Weaving Traditions

Navajo rugs are unique because their warp is one, long continuous piece of wool thread. Once the warp is set, the size of the rug cannot be altered. The Navajo were first recognized as the finest weavers of small horse blankets, after the Spanish introduced horses to the American Southwest in the mid-1500s. This exhibition, from the collection of Miss Margaret Cranford, a Greenwich resident until her death in 1974, will trace the history of the Navajo weaving tradition from the earliest Mexican-inspired saltillos, to mid-20th century pictorial rugs. More...

Participants in this workshop, run by Julio Valdez, will produce easily reproducible painterly prints through the process of silk aquatint (silk collagraph) - a non-acid alternative to etching. The workshop will offer tips on color mixing, and modifying and demonstrating the uniqueness of using water based inks.  More...

Celebrate National Honeybee Day with hive demonstrations and a honey bee scavenger hunt in the Museum’s Farm Market. Take home native wildflower seeds and meet a variety of other insects.
