Packing all the drama of “A Chorus Line,” the adolescent charm of “Fame” and the talent of “Glee,” “Purple Dreams” is the story of students at the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina.
From auditions to call-backs to ultimate triumph, filmmaker Joanne Hock follows a group at the school as they undertake a production of “The Color Purple,” the first licensed to a high school theater department.
The students juggle difficult home lives, personal rivalries and disappointments. The result of skillful filmmaking is that the viewer journeys right along with them. It is a rocky but joyful ride that shows the undeniable value of arts in education.
