It's an all-day opening reception for a Retrospective Exhibition of the abstract expressionist painter, Stanley Bate! Born in 1903, Bate absorbed the varied influences of his NY contemporaries from Rothko, Motherwell and Cornell, to Pollock, and Louise Nevelson, and his early realistic landscapes and still-lifes were replaced with something entirely new - with nods to color field, collage, the mixing of textures into paint, mixed media, the inclusion of found objects and thick, luscious impasto. Ridgefield Playhouse A MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient, Giddens co-founded the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops and has been nominated for six additional Grammys, as soloist and collaborator, including for her collaboration with Francesco Turrisi on There is No Other (2019). Her latest album, They’re Calling Me Home, was recorded with Turrisi in Ireland during the recent lockdown. She recently composed an opera (to be performed at Spoleto Festival USA), has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert, and was named Artistic Director of the Silk Road Ensemble.
