In the late 90’s, backstage at Ben Freed’s Muscoot Farm Bluegrass Festival, Mark Murphy, Michael Sassano, Wayne Fugate, and Lisa Gutkin gathered for a jam and found themselves on stage 20 minutes later as “Lisa’s Pieces,” a name that has lovingly stuck through the years. Mary started life in South Norwalk, and after becoming the first female student at Brown University and a professor at Wellesley College, became the 11th president of Mount Holyoke. Over her life, she was awarded 20 honorary doctorate degrees from the country’s most prestigious universities, and became a peace activist and proponent for abolishing child labor. More... |

Jane & Laurayne's Walk

A two-day series of events where the unique story of how we see, interact with, and feel about the city of Bridgeport will be explored on film, on foot, and on bicycle. A Jane’s Walk, inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs, encourages residents to explore the walkability of their town. The Walk was expanded to include Bridgeport educator, community organizer, and civil rights leader Laurayne Farrar-James, who embodied the principles of human-centered and community-led change that are central to civic engagement. Because of COVID, the Walk was translated to a ten-minute film, which will be shown at 6:30 at The Bijou Theatre (doors open 6pm; followed by Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn”). On Saturday at 1:30pm, an actual walk and cycle ride will follow many of the sites featured in the video to explore the city, connect with neighbors, and contribute to thoughtful conversations about creative, community-driven city building.
