Being truly ‘Grounded’

Have you ever noticed when you meet or hang out with people who are grounded, it just feels good being around them. There is just some kind of energy or magnetism that makes you want to stay in their presence and remain connected to them. Their energy helps to calm and balance yours. It’s as though you feel ‘plugged back in’ to a kind of force that makes you feel good, more centered, and alive.

Then, when you part ways with these people, the effect can last awhile, but eventually, there always seems to be a return to a less desirable state that is often accompanied by feelings of being imbalanced, off center, and out of tune. You may also feel some angst, worry, being unsettled, or even sad, or disconnected.

The solution is simple: Just keep hanging out with these people and all will be well! Yes, but not always practical though.

However, what if you could hang out with someone on a regular basis that could lift your spirit, boost your mood, balance and center you, and improve your overall health and well-being? What if you didn’t even have to travel very far to do this? What if when you are traveling, this special person could still be with you as well?

Wouldn’t that be an amazing blessing?

YES, IT WOULD!

AND... it IS possible!

So, who is this special someone?

It’s ‘Mother Earth’ of course!

The concept called ‘grounding’ or ‘earthing’ has become very popularized over the past decade, but it’s not a new concept overall. Our ancestors new the wisdom of literally connecting to the earth (bare skin on bare earth). This wisdom was lost over time, and definitely became much worse in the 1960’s when people started wearing rubber soled shoes that insulated their feet from the very planet they live on. Interesting enough, that is also the same time that many inflammatory related health conditions started to significantly rise (such as chronic arthritis and heart disease. Presently, we have a whole slew of chronic inflammatory health conditions that could be stemming partially from being ungrounded).

The simplest way to ground yourself is just go barefoot on the Earth for awhile. Yes, take off your shoes and socks and walk around your yard (if you don’t spray your lawn with pesticides). You can also sit, stand, or lay on the earth with bare skin touching the ground.

Bottom line: An electrical system has to be ‘grounded correctly’ in order to work correctly. The human body is no different. We are also electrical (our: tissues, fluids, cells, and even consciousness) — and we must also be grounded to operate safely and efficiently.

How much and how often should you ‘ground’ or ‘earth’ yourself?

As much as possible!

However, it’s amazing what just even a few minutes can do. A minimum would be at least 10-20 minutes a day. 30-60 minutes would be much better though. Ideally, you would want to spend more time grounding on a daily basis (up to several hours), especially if you have spent many days, weeks, months, and years not being grounded.

Finding the time could mean just ‘fitting it into’ your day. For example: eating outside, working outside, exercising and playing outside — and doing so with bare feet or bare skin touching the bare earth.

There are commercial products on the market available (such as grounding mats, pads, sheets, and stickers) that seem to provide some people with positive results. However, the best technology to use when possible is ‘Mother Earth’ herself. The whole point is to be ‘plugged into the Earth’, not a wall socket.

Grounding (earthing) has many benefits including: decreasing pain and inflammation; improving circulation and heart function; improving mood and brain function; improving healing responses from injuries or illnesses; improving energy levels; improving hormone balance; improving sleep; and much more.

Best part — there is NO financial cost (except if you don’t do it!)

Remember: Knowledge is knowing; wisdom is doing.

Knowing about grounding (earthing) is not enough, you actually have to do it for it to work in your life.

Returning H’Om to Woodstock

I am thrilled that the Woodstock Fruit Festival will be back in action in 2024. I have been invited back as one of the key presenters; and I’m looking forward to serving the ‘high vibe fruity tribe’ that is often present at this event. For many years, the event was held in Upstate New York near the southern Adirondacks, and it was a fun place to have the festival for sure. However, the festival has found a new home (called: H’Om) in South Florida, which looks very promising.

If you are into plant-based eating, high vibe people, and taking your health to a new level, this event could serve you well. Days are often filled with delicious nutritious food and beverages (such as: sugarcane juice, fresh young coconut water; amazing exotic fruits and veggies; and other plant-based delights; daily exercise classes; meditation, yoga, Qigong; dance parties; fun nature hikes; play-time in the water (this year will be a fresh lagoon with waterfalls; and some beach time); social gatherings, fun games, and activities; and empowering educational opportunities (workshops, classes, and lectures) that can improve your overall health and well-being.

There are limited spaces and tickets are already over 50% sold. At this point, camping is the only housing option available on campus. However, there are local Air B-n-b’s and hotels nearby.

*Note: January is a prime travel season in South Florida, so if you plan to go to the festival and stay off campus, consider booking your housing reservations early to ensure availability and best pricing options.

The price of the festival usually goes up by at least $50 each month as well, so book early if you are sure you want to go.

Healing On Point

There are many potent acupoints in the body that can help to rebalance and re harmonize the flow of vital life force energy (also known as “Qi” — pronounced “Chee”). Always remember: “When Qi flows, then health glows.” One such point is Stomach 36 or ST 36 point. (Also known as: “Zusalni”, “3 Mile Point”, or “Leg 3 Miles”.

This point is considered one of most potent acupoints in the body. A key point for total body tonification. A “Swiss Army knife” point, since it can be beneficial for many things. It is also considered the ‘source point’ for the Stomach, and a good point to help bring us back to center and a balanced position in life.

Overall this point is a good point for:

  •  total strengthening of body and mind

  • general fatigue and weakness

  • post-partum recovery

  • knee conditions

  • shin splints

  • stomach and intestinal issues: nausea, vomiting, reflux, belching, cramps, bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, low appetite, poor digestion

  • immune system: chills, fever, asthma

  • reproductive (impotence)

  • conditions of: jaw, breast; and abdomen

  • pain in thigh, knee, and lower leg

  • psycho-emotional: stability, solidity, grounding; bipolar; helps calm: agitation, anger, fright, sadness, depression.

Location of this point:

Toward the outside of the top of the lower leg in the hallow between the tibia and fibula bones. (Approximately 3 fingers below the bottom of the knee cap; and then 2 fingers outward.)  See picture above for point location.

How to stimulate this point:

You can use your index finger an/or thumb to push gently into this point. Or, gently squeeze the point on each side and then lift this point upwards. Hold the pressure or gentle stretch of the point for 1-3 minutes as you breathe slowly through your nose down into your lower belly region.

To be clear:

Does pushing on this point make up for a lack of ‘healthy living’? Does it erase a person’s bad habits or poor health choices. Of course not. It can’t make up for those things! However what it can do is help to rebalance the disrupted energy flow in the body that these things caused in the first place.

The whole point of using this vital acupoint is to reestablish balance, harmony, and flow in the body.  It's not a substitute for healthy living, but rather a supplement for healthy living.

Time for a ‘Breathing Inventory’

One of the keys to 'breathing well' is to become more aware of how well you are breathing overall throughout the day.

One simple way to become more aware is to use a 'breathing inventory' to help you discover 'when' and 'how' often your breathing becomes disrupted, or out of balance. You may be surprised to find that in some situations and activities your breathing is okay, while in others it is not so fluid or healthy. (Note: Make sure to have fun with this little experiment — don't turn into a hypochondriac!)

You can find a sample 'breathing inventory' below to help you with this endeavor.

'Breathing iInventory'

Take note of 'how' your breathing changes, as you:

__ Transition from one task to the next? (Examples: Opening the door to

walk out of the house. Move from doing laundry, to preparing a meal.)

__ Focus on something up close? Or, far away?.

__ 'Hang out' with different people? (family; friends; co-workers; strangers)

__ Spend time in different places? (work; home; church; gym; store;

     friend's)

__ Perform various movements or exercises; or assume various postures?

__ Are eating and/or drinking?

__ Are watching T.V., movies, or videos?

__ Using the computer?

__ Texting? Or, talking on the phone?

__ Listening to music? Or, play/performing music? (Does it change with the

     music?)

__ Are talking with another person? Or, with many people in a group?

__ Engaging in making love (before, during, and after)?

__ Driving a vehicle? Or, riding as a passenger in a vehicle?

__ Rising in the morning; and going to bed in the evening?

__ When bathing or taking a shower?

__ When shaving; combing hair; brushing teeth; or other personal hygiene?

__ Are getting dressed and undressed?

__ Are going to the bathroom (both: bladder and bowel movements)?

__ Are doing 'whatever else' you discover when using this inventory?

In the various situations above, you may want to take note whether your breathing: speeds up; slows down; switches to mouth breathing; hold your breath; yawn or sigh; becomes shallow; becomes irregular; becomes forced or tense; your posture changes (shoulders shrug up or pull forward; slump); becomes chest-dominant vs. lower belly; etc.

Reminder: “How you breathe is how you live.”

To 'live better', you have to 'breathe better' — and the only way to 'breathe better' is to become more aware of how you are breathing most often.

Connecting with your breath for even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference in your health and your life.

It is ALWAYS time well spent!
