Breathwork is more than just breathing. Breathwork is about transformation. If you want true and lasting transformation in your health, learn to harness the power of your breath. It’s a ‘universal therapy’ – with various ways to breathe to bring about various changes in the body, heart-mind, and spirit. For example, each emotion is accompanied by a certain way of breathing. As such, as you change your breathing, you can better manage and self-regulate your emotions.
Breath is what gives us life. Each day, we can consciously ‘breathe life’ into us, or unconsciously drain life out. Breathing should be the ‘go to’ when feeling out of balance. It should be the first thought, not an afterthought. This means when you feel like something is not quite right, out of tune, or out of sorts, you should check in with yourself and your breath immediately. Ask yourself: “How’s my breathing right now?” Pay attention to what you notice and make any changes needed. Also, as you stay more in tune and connected to your breath, you will find that you don’t get out of balance as often.
It’s amazing what the breath will reveal if you’ll let it. It’s one of my favorite assessment tools when working with patients and clients, as it shows me so much about who a person is and why they are feeling the way they do. Restoring the breath back to a healthy pattern and rhythm will inevitably help them feel better quicker and allow a return to a higher quality of life.
There are many secrets and gems hidden within the breath. Harnessing it’s power will allow these secrets to be revealed and these gems to shine bright. It’s really intriguing that one of the greatest gifts in life is hiding literally right under our nose, and many people never realize it. Like most great truths, the breath is simple, profound, and everlasting.
