Living within the Elements

Winter is still upon us with cooler temperatures being experienced, and a slower energetic feel overall. The healing element associated with winter is water. Water is the most yin of the elements, and yin is associated with wetness, darkness, slowness, and contraction, which are also qualities of the winter season. The movement of water is inward, and Nature’s wisdom tells us to move in that direction during this season — inward for a time of deep rest, reflection, and renewal.

Therefore, extra rest, sleep, and stillness may be needed, especially to help rejuvenate the powerful organs associated with the water element — the kidneys and bladder. If we wish to thrive well moving into next spring, we must ‘rest now’ to help adequately recharge our internal batteries to get ready for Nature’s next yearly cycle. (*Note: Unfortunately, many people spend this time in a crazy, stressed out, busy state, which is the opposite of how Nature intends things to be. As such, is it any wonder why people get run down and sick during this time of year?)

It is hard to surrender sometimes, but it’s also necessary sometimes. During this winter season, pay attention to the signals (symptoms) you are getting. If surrender is needed take the time to do so, just as the rest of nature does (allow yourself to go dormant at times). This can be a good time to start planning and planting ideas, goals, and visions. These ‘seeds of consciousness’ can be set into place, and then allowed to be dormant for awhile.

When the spring season occurs, these seeds can then grow and flourish correctly. Instead of ‘pushing harder’ right now, you may need to ‘pull back’ a bit. This is why motivation sometimes drops in the winter month;, and also why new years intentions seem out of reach or more difficult toward the beginning of the year (you are fighting Nature’s cycles).

Embrace the element of water this winter season. Connect with it physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Both warm and cool baths and showers may be helpful. The colors of black, purple, and dark blue are associated with the water element, so including these colors in your wardrobe may be helpful. The taste associated with the water element is salty, and natural foods that have this flavor may be nourishing at this time. The direction associated with water is North, so spending some time each day facing this direction (such is in mediation, exercising, eating, and during time with friends and family) may help you further connect with the water element.

When we live in harmony with the elements, we live in harmony with our health!

The H.E.A.L.T.H. Formula

In order to be vibrant and healthy, one must embrace certain qualities of ‘being’ and ‘living’.

To make it easier to understand and remember, I have designed a simple mnemonic to follow called: H.E.A.L.T.H.

Harmony — Health is about harmony. For example: harmony of rest-activity; work-play; yin-yang; chaos-order; and day-night. Cultivating harmony within the body, heart-mind, and spirit is a MUST to be healthy. Harmony is about balance, not moderation. It’s not... “everything in moderation”. This is a flawed concept for many reasons. Nature uses balance, man uses moderation. Nature is smarter, I promise you!

Evolution — In order to thrive, your health must keep evolving. As the saying goes: “if you’re not growing, you’re dying”. Structure is important, but rigidity is not necessary. You have to keep learning, and remain flexible mentally, physically, and spiritually. However, this does not mean you should keep changing your mind, or never make up your mind. That’s indiscretion, and it can become a detriment to your health very quickly. You must be decisive, and act in your best interest every day. If you live consciously and mindfully each day, the evolution will naturally occur. If you are stuck, you will get clear signs from the universe telling you so — you will ‘feel off’ or ‘in a rut’. If this occurs, then It’s time to reflect and allow yourself to evolve.

Action — Your health will be a product of the choices you make and actions you take each day. You must be an ‘active participant’ in the health and healing process. No person (other than yourself) is going to make you healthy. It’s your body, your life, your health, and your responsibility. When your choices and actions align with vibrant health and well-being, your results will reflect this. If you are not getting the results you want, it’s time to choose and act differently. Each day, you will have another chance. How do you get good at something? You have to practice. Being healthy is no exception. The more you practice, the healthier you will become.

Love — Love truly is one of the greatest forces in the universe. Love of self; love of others; and love of the planet are vital for cultivating good health. The biopsychosocial aspect of health is probably one of he most important, yet most often ignored aspects of health. Health is not just the absence of disease. Health is culmination of physical, mental-emotional, spiritual, and biopsychosocial well-being. We need to purposely interact with each other and the environment. When we live ‘on purpose’, or ‘have a purpose’, our health prospers. Infuse LOVE into what you do, and who you are, including your health.

Time — Bottom line: Health is earned! If you want to be healthy, you must put in the time to be healthy. When you look at the amount of time people waste on things that promote poor health vs. good health, is it really any wonder why we are a sick species? Here’s a simple guideline to follow: If it’s not going to build your health, don’t engage in it! Yes, it’s that simple. Some examples would be: Looking down at a phone all day; wasting time on the internet; constant procrastinating; and polluting the body-mind-spirit with junk. These things will all break your health. Spend this time doing things that build your health instead.

Holism — I often get labeled a “holistic health practitioner”. I’m okay with that label, as long as it’s in reference to the fact that I use a truly holistic approach to health, healing, and well-being (not because I sometimes wear hippie clothes or crystals, which is also true). It’s not just one aspect of health (such as diet) that will make you healthy. All aspects are important. This is why I constantly personally use and teach my ‘Chain-of-Health SystemTM for vibrant health and well-being. There are 8 links in the chain (Food-Air-Water-Light-Rest-Activity-Hygiene-Love). ALL the links are equally important. As such, taking a holistic vs. myopic approach is always wise and advised.

A Tribute to Woodstock

I really looked forward to returning to the Woodstock Fruit Festival again this year, especially since the event did not happen in 2023. The event just recently occurred from January 24th-31st, and it was another EPIC event for sure!

I always feel 'supercharged' after hanging out at this event. I am blessed and honored to have been asked to be a featured presenter again this year. I have been a presenter since the birthing of this event, and this made year #12. I thoroughly enjoyed serving the community again at this year’s festival.

What makes this event so special?

Bottom line: The 'LOVING VIBE' and cool people that exist at this week-long event.

And of course... the location: This year, the event was held at a tropical oasis in South Florida at at place called H’Om.

'Heart-Centered' Breathing

Breathing is important to life.

Breathing well’ is important to having a better life.

I have worked with thousands of people at this point in my career. One thing is for sure — most people do NOT breathe very well at all. Poor breathing is a core dysfunction that so many people have. It’s so common, people think it’s normal. However, there is a big difference between common and normal. Many things are common (such as poor breathing habits), but they are not normal.

One of the keys to ‘breathing well’ is to breathe through your ‘heart center’. What does this mean exactly? It means that as you consciously breathe, you can imagine the breath moving in and out through the center of your heart. When done correctly, the breath should be moving horizontally, not vertically. This means breathing outwards, not upwards. It means, that when you breathe in through your nose, your chest should move forwards and your spine backwards, as though your heart is expanding in 2 opposite directions simultaneously— pushing your chest forward and spine backwards.

When this natural expansion of the chest happens, your main breathing muscle (‘diaphragm’) will move the way it is supposed to, downward on the breath in, and upward on the way out. In other words, there is no need to ‘breathe into your belly’ as is often cued by so many yoga teachers, therapists, fitness professionals, breathing instructors, and spiritual teachers. Your breath will naturally expand into your belly when the diaphragm moves the way it is supposed to. You will also experience a ‘full expression’ of the breath — meaning the front of your body will move forwards, your sides will move sideways, and the back of your body will move backwards.

However, since many people breathe vertically (their chest moves up and down), instead of horizontally (the chest expanding outward and inward), this leads to inefficient breathing and faulty movement of the diaphragm; as well as only a partial expression of a full breath. The result is chronic poor breathing and less optimal health overall.

Taking a ‘heart centered’ approach in life is a good concept — and breathing is no exception.

Reminder: “How you breathe is how you live.”

Connecting with your breath for even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference in your health and your life.

It is ALWAYS time well spent!

Dr. SAM Health & Healing Resources:

Five years ago, I released a song I wrote called: “The Health Raiser Song!” The purpose of the song was to motivate people to be more healthy in a fun and upbeat way.

This song will definitely raise you up — by motivating you, inspiring you, energizing you, and elevating your mood! It’s just the right dose of musical therapy that will have you moving, dancing, smiling, and singing along for sure! The song opens the heart, enlightens the mind, and speaks to the spirit. It’s a collective call to humanity for an awakening and empowerment toward better health and a better life — for ALL!
