Subject: Dr. SAM December Wellness Newsletter

Welcome to the December 2022 Edition of

Dr. SAM's Health, Healing, & Well-being Newsletter!

Winter is upon us and the cold is here! The healing element associated with winter is water. The movement of water is inward — and Nature’s wisdom also tells us to move in that direction (inward) during this season. Water is the most yin of the elements, and yin is associated with wetness and darkness, which are also qualities of the winter season. As we transition from the energy of fall moving downward and towards winter moving inward, it is very important that we turn our awareness deeply inward.

Extra rest, sleep, and stillness may be needed, especially to help rejuvenate the powerful organs associated with the water element — the kidneys and bladder. If we wish to thrive well moving into next spring, we must ‘rest now’ to help adequately recharge our internal batteries to get ready for Nature’s next yearly cycle. (*Note: Unfortunately, many people spend the holidays in a crazy, stressed out, busy state, which is the opposite of how Nature intends things to be. As such, is it any wonder why people get run down and sick during this time of year?)

Below, you can find the December 2022 edition of Dr. SAM's Health, Healing, & Well-being Newsletter to help keep you motivated and strong, and live with passion in the world!

May it serve you well. ❤️🙏☯️

Improving your H.E.A.L.T.H.

In order to attain vibrant health, one must embrace certain qualities of being and living. To make it easier to understand and remember, I have designed a simple H.E.A..L.T.H. mnemonic to follow.

Harmony — Health is about harmony. For example: harmony of rest-activity; work-play; yin-yang; chaos-order; and day-night. Cultivating harmony within the body, heart-mind, and spirit is a MUST to be healthy. Harmony is about balance, not moderation. It’s not... “everything in moderation”. This is a flawed concept for many reasons. I made a YouTube Video about this in the past (you can find it here >>> moderation video). Nature uses balance, man uses moderation. Nature is smarter, I promise you!

Evolution — In order to thrive, your health must keep evolving. As the saying goes: “if you’re not growing, you’re dying. Structure is important, but rigidity is not necessary. You have to keep learning, and remain flexible mentally, physically, and spiritually. However, this does not mean you should keep changing your mind, or never make up your mind. That’s indiscretion, and it can become a detriment to your health very quickly. You must be decisive, and act in your best interest every day. If you live consciously and mindfully each day, the evolution will naturally occur. If you are stuck, you will get clear signs from the universe telling you so — you will ‘feel off’ or ‘in a rut’. When this happens, it’s time to reflect and allow yourself to evolve.

Action — Your health will be a product of the choices you make and actions you take each day. You must be an ‘active participant’ in the health and healing process. No person (other than yourself) is going to make you healthy. It’s your body, your life, your health, and your responsibility. When your choices and actions align with vibrant health and well-being, your results will reflect this. If you are not getting the results you want, it’s time to choose and act differently. Each day, you will have another chance. How do you get good at something? You have to practice. Being healthy is no exception. The more you practice, the healthier you will become.

Love — Love truly is one of the greatest forces in the universe. Love of self; love of others; and love of the planet are vital for cultivating good health. The ‘biopsychosocial aspect of health is probably one of he most important, yet most often ignored aspects of health. Health is not just the absence of disease. Health is culmination of physical, mental-emotional, spiritual, and biopsychosocial well-being. We need to purposely interact with each other and the environment. When we live ‘on purpose’, or ‘have a purpose’, our health prospers. Infuse LOVE into what you do, and who you are, including your health.

Time — Bottom line: Health is earned! If you want to be healthy, you must put in the time to be healthy. When you look at the amount of time people waste on things that promote poor health vs. good health, is it really any wonder why we are a sick species? Here’s a simple guideline to follow: If it’s not going to build your health, don’t engage in it! Yes, it’s that simple. Some examples would be: Looking down at a phone all day; wasting time on the internet; constant procrastinating; and polluting the body-mind-spirit with junk. These things will all break your health. Spend this time doing things that build your health instead.

Holism — I often get labeled a “holistic health practitioner”. I’m okay with that label, as long as it’s in reference to the fact that I use a truly holistic approach to health, healing, and well-being (not because I sometimes wear hippie clothes or crystals, which is also true). It’ not just one aspect of health (such as diet) that will make one healthy, all aspects are important. This is why I personally use and teach my ‘Chain-of-Health SystemTM’ for vibrant health and well-being. There are 8 links in the chain (Food-Air-Water-Light-Rest-Activity-Hygiene-Love). ALL the links are equally important. As such, taking a holistic vs. myopic approach is always wise and advised.

Healing On Point

There are many potent acupoints in the body that can help to reblance and reharmonize the flow of vital life force energy (also known as “Qi” (pronounced “Chee”). As I’ve mentioned many times before: “When Qi flows, then health glows.” One such point is Kidney 3 or K3 point. (Also known as: “Supreme Stream”, “Taixi”, or “Calm Essence”).

Sticking with the theme of winter, this is a powerful 'water point' that can be used during this winter season. This point is considered the ‘source point’ for the kidneys and can be used to treat imbalances of excess or deficiencies of this organ.

Here’s what it can help with:

  • Important Note: As was with last month’s point (Large intestine 4 or LI 4), this K3 point should also not be used during pregnancy when you don't want to induce labor, as this point can help to induce labor. Therefore, during a tough labor it may be helpful if needed to assist the birthing process.

Overall this point is a good point for:

  • back pain

  • ankle pain

  • kidney/bladder issues

  • immune and reproductive issues

  • menstrual cramps and irregularity

  • insomnia

  • difficult labor

  • swelling in ankles

  • combatting fatigue

  • overall body vitality

  • sense of hearing; earaches; ringing in ears

  • dealing with: fear or nightmares

  • promoting: willpower; courage; determination; persistence; and perseverance

  • connecting us to our original source energy; and supporting us in realizing our potential in the world

Location of this point:

This is point is located on the inside of the lower leg ‘in a hollow’ midway between the inside ankle bone and the achilles tendon. (See picture above for point location.)

How to stimulate this point:

You can use your index finger or thumb to push gently into this point. Or, gently squeeze the point on each side and then lift this point upwards. Hold the pressure or gentle stretch of the point for 1-3 minutes as you breathe slowly through your nose down into your lower belly region.

Again, just to be clear:

Does pushing on this point make up for a lack of ‘healthy living’? Does it erase a person’s bad habits or poor health choices. Of course not. It can’t make up for those things! However what it can do is help to rebalance the disrupted energy flow in the body that these things caused in the first place.

The whole point of using this vital point is to reestablish balance, harmony, and flow in the body. (Remember Harmony and Holism are part of the overall H.E.A.L.T.H. concept that was discussed above. Also, since I’m “holistic” (and sometimes wear hippie clothes), this point may also help you.

The 10-minute Timer

A simple self-care and healthcare strategy that can be used to improve commitment and follow-through is the ‘10-Minute Timer’. Sometimes, getting started is challenging for people because they get overwhelmed with the idea of doing something that takes time out of their day. (Remember: Health is earned! You will have to invest some Time each day towards your health. Again, see the H.E.A.L.T.H. concept discussed above in this Newsletter.) However, once you get started, you may find that you want to keep going a bit longer. I have found through experimentation and clinical practice that 10 minutes is ‘doable’ for most people.

Therefore, the mindset is: “I’m now going to exercise, sunbathe, meditate, or whatever else is needed to build health for the next 10 minutes”. Most people can find at least 10 minutes in their day to do something good for their health. The beauty of this approach is that it starts ‘building healthy habits’, and as you learned earlier in this Newsletter, health is a product of the choices you make and actions you take — a.k.a. ‘your habits’.

This approach also makes the task of being healthy not so complicated or overwhelming. Performing healthful practices in these ‘smaller chunks’ of time is achievable. As a result, often a commitment to several 10-minute blocks of time can be accomplished throughout the day, as opposed to a bigger chunk of time needed all at once. These chunks of time then add up to the amount of time people say they “don’t have” (yet, they have plenty of time to watch TV; look at social media; play games.. okay, don’t get me started!)

Just set the timer, and go. When you do, NOTHING else can exist in your world. NO distractions. Total presence and focus on what you are doing. You may find that over time (no pun intended), your 10-minute Timer grows into a 15 or 20-minute Timer.

Good health just seems to have a funny way of growing once you commit to it!
