Did you know that as recently as the early 1950s, doctors were still concerned about heart attack patients getting up and walking around? They wanted to keep them resting as much as possible to help them heal.

Luckily, in the late 1950 new guidelines were set in motion telling heart patients to resume activity carefully, but as quickly as possible. Sometimes that means just walking around the room, and other times it means resuming normal exercise levels.

Here are some ways exercise can help your heart health:
Strengthens muscles – When combining cardio workouts with strength training, you can truly see results, inside and out. The heart is a muscle, so when the rest of your body is working hard, your heart is pumping more, which gives it a great workout.
Helps control weight – A healthy weight is key for overall health, and constant exercise helps with this. Being overweight makes it hard for your heart to be healthy.

Help you quit smoking – Smoking is a top contributor to heart disease, and when people exercise regularly, they are less likely to start smoking. Those who already smoke are more likely to quit with a regular exercise routine. A 2011 study conducted on teenagers in West Virginia revealed that those involved in programs designed to quit smoking and exercise were 3x more likely to quit smoking!

Prevent or slow the development of diabetes – When muscles can work more efficiently like they are with regular exercise, research has shown that this can lower the risk of diabetes. This risk can be reduced up to 50%, with a daily routine of strength training and cardio exercise.

Lowers blood pressure – Have you heard of beta-blockers? Beta-blockers are a type of medication that helps slow your heart rate down, helping your heart work a little less. Did you know that exercise works the same way? Regular exercise helps slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure, which is a big risk factor when talking about heart disease.

Lowers stress – Stress is hard on your heart, you know this. But exercise helps people relax and can reduce some of that burden, helping your heart in the process!

As you can see, the benefits of exercise extend beyond the time you spend at the gym! Your heart and your health will thank you for the time you spend getting, and staying, in shape this year.
