Olive oil is the king of fats. Probably because when used right, it makes skin glow.
...but are you harnessing this powerful property of olive oil?
The olive tree was first discovered in Asia Minor about 6000 years ago and then spread to all the Mediterranean basin. Ever since, olive oil has been extracted from the pulp of its fruits and proven to lower the incidence of age-related diseases associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.
Modern-day science has proven that regular use of dietary olive oil curbs the threat of cardiovascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. Its benefits to skin are even more profound because it yields micelles that normalize the aging process and help regenerate glowing, supple, skin!
Thanks to advances in biochemistry, scientists have successfully mapped the hallmarks of aging skin. Elaborate, with many moving parts, one skin cell is more complex than the largest cities. And as one single mechanism begins to slow, a domino-effect of premature aging occurs. Things that accelerate it are:
Eating sugar
Being chronically dehydrated
Drinking excess alcohol
Applying chemical-rich soaps, perfumes, makeups, lotions, and sunscreens to your skin
If there’s a science nerd in you clawing to get out, then you’ll be happy to know scientists have outlined the cause of this accelerated aging. When skin starts to fall apart, it’s due to a combination of:
Genomic instability
Telomere attrition
Epigenetic alterations
Loss of proteostasis
Deregulated nutrient sensing
Mitochondrial dysfunction
Cellular senescence
Stem cell exhaustion
Altered intracellular communication
As a protective aging shield, there’s nothing better than olive oil. It works to slow or normalize all the protective mechanisms of premature wrinkles. That makes it worth more than its weight in gold, as a soap!
The highly regarded medical journal, Molecules, notes this in their research. They wrote, “Virtually all these [aging] hallmarks are targeted by dietary olive oil, particularly by virgin olive oil, since many of its beneficial effects can be accounted not only for the monounsaturated nature of its predominant fatty acid (oleic acid), but also for the bioactivity of its minor compounds, which can act on cells through both direct and indirect mechanisms due to their ability to modulate gene expression.”
If you’re not a science major, here’s a simpler explanation:
Olive oil carries a slew of fats that are unique to the olive that make it magical for you skin. They aren’t found anywhere else! And once applied to skin, it acts a “youth fertilizer.”
Imagine wrinkles as being a type of inflammation caused by the flames of environmental toxins. Olive oil acts like soothing water. Once put out, aging is normalized by the unique characteristics of olive oil-rich soap. It also preserves hair and nails, making an olive oil bar a highly sought after, natural shampoo and face wash.
The anti-infectious properties and anti-aging properties of olive oil soap make it one of the best medicines in history.
Sadly, due to the excess time it takes to prepare and cure (over a year!), true olive oil soap is no longer available. Few companies are willing to pay for the storage costs of curing a bar of olive oil.
Fortunately, as The People’s Chemist, I've been making olive oil-based soaps for more than two decades! My daughter started as my apprentice at 13 years old...
