My Son Blair is 17 yo.
In these teen years, wearing a dad hat is really hard.
So, I've tossed it. Now I wear the hat of "advisor." And every day we have our advisor meetings.
Vaping.
Sex.
Fentanyl.
Doctors.
Winning.
Losing.
Fear.
Media.
Marijuana.
Alcohol.
How to study.
How to Memorize.
Nothing is off-topic. And Today, I had to break the bad news:
"Everyone wants to say yes to their goals...and talk about making them happen. But nobody wants to say no to the things that peel you away from making them happen."
Blair wants to be pilot. In fact, he's ready to finish school a year early to start his aviation track.
I’m not sure this is a good idea…
Does he know he’s going to have to say no to all of the things that will get in the way of becoming an aviator?
Wrestling.
Jiu Jitsu.
Sneaking late night bong hits.
Acai dates with his little brother.
Driving to his big sisters to go to concerts.
Taking his little sister to wrestling practice and cheering her on?
Snowboard trips with dad.
Birthday parties with his siblings.
Summer get-a-aways.
Most if not all of these things have to go if you want to accomplish something great. Hyper focus is the only way to mastery and progress.
Hell, I remember missing my grandmas funeral for a college chemistry test. She was my best friend and hero - born on the streets of Czech Republic, her father got drafted as a pilot for the war. She got dropped off in a Russian orphanage at 10 yo. At 18 yo she got a college scholarship to Ohio State. After graduating with a degree in nursing, she became a pilot to commemorate her father. In time she was a self-made millionaire and prided herself on "pulling her own wagon.”
She was hyper-focused to progress out of poverty…
Pulitzer prize winner Annie Dillard spoke best on making progress when she told her students to "Write as if you were dying.”
And to do that in anything, you need to say no to everything that doesn’t advance your purpose.
This was impetus behind teaching my kids how to make old-fashioned soap at a very young age: When you set out to make a seemingly simple bar of soap, all distractions have to be removed and every variable from outside temperature to humid has to be accounted for.
That’s where Filthy Animal Soap sprang from - lessons in focus and progress.
Since so few are able to do it, you won’t find a single soap bar or real soap on the shelves of Whole Foods, Sprouts or your Farmer’s Market. That’s because real soap, as it was invented by Babylonian chemists, is too damn hard to make.
Yet, Blair started making them years ago in our garage…and to this day, they’re still an Etsy Bestseller!
“Thank you for crafting this natural soap for everyone to enjoy. The ‘Filthy Animal Soap’ fully met and exceeded my high expectations. I am more than pleased and have become a believer in the soap and use it for daily washing of hands, body and hair.”
“Love this amazing soap!! Works great on my granddaughter’s eczema! Thank you!!”
“I love this soap! I feel clean and it leaves my skin soft & it smells good!”
Both the Charcoal Bar and Wonder Woman bar are rich in shea butter, olive oil, tallow and essential oils, making them perfect for hair, face and skin.

At 17 yo, Blairs gonna have to show the ability to say no to distractions before he earns the right to say yes to aviation…on the micro scale, hand stirring lye and fat to make real soap sometimes requires hours of uninterrupted focus and up to a year of just curing on the rack. Maybe ten thousand more hours of soap making will get him to the starting line of aviation.
