I am writing to share with you the Austin Transportation Department’s preliminary reassessment of the
Local Area Traffic Management program, which includes planned actions for projects in District 10. LATM is the program that installs traffic calming measures like speed cushions and plays a critical role in achieving the City’s Vision Zero goal of zero traffic fatalities. The Austin Transportation Department (ATD) report can be accessed here – http://bit.ly/2uOKSsD. I have added an extra table identifying only District 10 projects.
The report contains a lot of important context and background, and I invite you to review it. I thank ATD Director Rob Spillar and his team for their time and attention to improving this process. You may direct follow up questions to Mario Porras on the ATD staff. He can be reached at Mario.Porras@austintexas.gov or 512-974-7656. In addition, we ask that you please copy my office on any emails to ATD using district10@austintexas.gov.
I would like to add the following information by project type:
Recently installed projects:
1. My office will be hosting a community meeting to facilitate communication between ATD and the Jester neighborhood. The meeting will be held at 7 PM on Tuesday, August 29th, at Coffee Shark, 7300 Ranch Road 2222 Bldg. 5 #111. Please join us at the meeting if you would like to be involved in next steps. ATD wishes to look holistically at the Jester area so residents of Beauford Drive and Lakewood Drive west of 360 will find this meeting useful too. In taking this broader view, we ask that you please provide feedback on any other traffic safety concerns you have - http://bit.ly/2vX1KT1.
2. For Far West Boulevard and Mesa Drive, we anticipate that ATD will procure and install the modified, flat-top modular components to the existing speed cushions by the end of September. The plan is to test the modified cushions and then gather feedback.
For the streets identified for expanded public input, ATD will be reaching out to the relevant neighborhood associations and the project requestors directly for next steps. If you have questions or represent a neighborhood group, please email ATD and copy my office.
For streets scheduled for installation, please direct specific questions to the ATD contact and copy my office.
For the legacy projects on Perry Lane and Lakewood Drive east of 360, ATD will be reaching out to the relevant neighborhood associations and requestors before construction. If you have specific concerns, please reach out to ATD and copy my office.
I would like to thank the many constituents that took the time to share your concerns with me and my staff. Please join our contact list for this issue (http://bit.ly/speedcushions) or email us at district10@austintexas.gov.
Finally, as you discuss this issue online and in your neighborhoods, I ask that you please remember that all of us want safe streets. We may disagree about the best way to achieve that goal, but we can engage in productive and respectful dialogue. Remember the surest way not to experience speed cushions on our streets is to slow down and respect the speed limit.
Sincerely,
Alison Alter
City Council Member, District 10
