Subject: It's Budget Time at City Hall -- August Newsletter for District 10

Last year on the campaign trail, everywhere I went I heard concerns about how the City manages its budget. You told me about the parts of Austin that make the City great, like our parks and neighborhood pools, our libraries, our health services, and so much more. You emphasized the importance of the City being a good steward of our tax dollars and the need to provide effective and transparent government.

This week, interim City Manager Elaine Hart released her proposed Fiscal Year 2018 budget. The City Council will debate the budget through August and into September. Below, you will find several opportunities this month for you to share your budget thoughts in person and online with me and my staff. Thank you to those who already communicated your views via email, at our Town Hall, or at our first budget office hours.

Regards,
Council Member Alison Alter

How to Learn More about the Budget

Need the basics? Check out the presentation made at the June 19 District 10 Town Hall.

Want the latest info? See the presentation on the City Manager's proposed budget.

Ready to dive in to the numbers? This week the City launched a new tool, still in a beta mode,
Open Budget ATX. You can use it to find detailed, interactive charts that let you see everything from expenses across the entire city to the smallest details, like how much the Austin Public Library spent on office supplies for the library catalogue so far this year (about $6,000). See what you can find, and come by on Saturday to let us know what you think needs changing and what works.
New traffic safety infrastructure at Doss Elementary and Canyon Vista Middle School
Good news! When students at Doss and Canyon Vista return to school this year, they will be able to more safely cross the street. New Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons, which flash to stop traffic at crosswalks, are being constructed near Doss Elementary and Canyon Vista Middle School. For students at Doss, the improvements will be going in at Far West and Northledge. Kids going to Canyon Vista can use the new signal at the intersection of Spicewood Springs and Texas Plume Road. Thanks to neighborhood activism and the Quarter-Cent Fund, our students will be safer this fall.
CodeNEXT Land Use Commission Public Meetings

The Planning Commission and the Zoning & Platting Commission will be meeting jointly twice in August to discuss the proposed rewrite of our land development code, CodeNEXT.

Tuesday, August 8
Tuesday, August 29
7:00 p.m. at City Hall

There’s no need to deal with Mopac and downtown traffic in order to follow along. You can watch the meetings live online or on the ATXN archive. ATXN is also available live on select cable providers.

These meetings are a great way to learn more about the discussion around CodeNEXT. You’ll hear debate about what Austin needs, see presentations by staff, and be able to share this important information with your neighbors.
Provide comment on the Pedestrian Safety Action Plan draft

The City is working hard to achieve our Vision Zero goal of zero traffic-related fatalities. The Pedestrian Safety Action Plan is intended to be a holistic strategy to reduce and eliminate the dangerous crashes that injure and kill people who are walking. The plan will also encourage walking in Austin.

Got ideas to share? Take a look at the draft and start providing your feedback. You’ll need to set up an account to comment directly on the draft. Comments can also be sent in via email to pedestrian@austintexas.gov.
Get text, email, and phone reminders of trash and recyclable pickup schedules

Have you ever forgotten to put out your yard trimmings or recyclables and been forced to hang on to everything for another week? With Austin Resource Recovery’s new My Collection Schedule program, you can now receive automatic reminders of when the City will be doing pickups on your street. You’ll never miss a pickup again.
