Dear Neighbors,

Happy holidays from the District 10 Team! We are grateful to have spent another year serving you, and we look forward to continuing to strengthen community relationships in the new year.

I'd like to thank you for helping make 2018 a wonderful year. Your engagement and input helped guide initiatives such as the city's five-year strategic plan, Austin's first-ever outcomes-based budget, the 2018 Bond, and more. Looking ahead to 2019, my colleagues and I will continue to work to address citywide challenges, and I encourage you to remain involved in the upcoming conversations. Below, please find a few opportunities to help shape the future of Austin, as well as information on how to recycle your Christmas tree for free.

Additionally, I would like to remind everyone to take extra safety precautions this holiday season. While you may be focused on family and friends, thieves are setting their sights on easy targets. Included in this newsletter are tips from the Austin Police Department on ways to protect your property from break ins and theft. As always, if something does happen to you or a neighbor, please report it! No matter how small the crime, your report could help investigators track and solve cases across the city.

Wishing you and yours a safe and restful holiday,

Alison Alter
Council Member, District 10

Holiday Safety Tips from APD

Thieves are looking to window shop this holiday season at your expense. The Austin Police Department is urging folks to protect their vehicles and property by taking preventive steps against crime.

Auto Theft Prevention
  • Never leave your car running while unattended. It takes seconds to steal a car when it is left running. Always roll up the windows, turn off your car, lock the doors and take the keys with you.
  • Take valuables out of your vehicle. Leaving valuables visible in your car is an open invitation for a holiday Grinch eager to steal from you. Take your belongings or place them in the trunk before arriving at your final destination.
  • Record serial numbers. This makes it easier to recover property in the event it is found or turned in.
  • See something, say something. If you notice suspicious activity, call 9-1-1.

Home Burglary Prevention
  • Lock doors and windows. Secure your home, lock all doors and windows and set the alarm.
  • Mail. Ask a trusted neighbor or family member to watch your home and pick up your mail if you’re going to be away for an extended period of time.
  • Lighting. Place indoor and outdoor lights on an automatic timer.
  • Audio. Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.
  • Close the blinds and curtains. Make a family game and look through the windows and doors of your home. If you can see your gifts under the tree, so can the would-be thieves.
  • Package safety. Leave a note on your door asking package carriers (UPS, Fed Ex, USPS, etc.) not to leave packages on your doorstep. Request that they leave a notice so you can pick up packages from their facility.
Recycle Your Christmas Tree!

Don’t throw away your Christmas tree; give it another life by recycling it! Beginning Dec. 26, 2018, Austin Resource Recovery will pick up all natural trees, along with yard trimmings, on regularly scheduled collection days for curbside customers. All residents, including those outside of the curbside collection service area, can drop trees off at Zilker Park polo fields between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the following days:
  • Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018
  • Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018
  • Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019
  • Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019
Trees for curbside collection that are six feet or taller must be cut in half and should be at the curb by 6:30 a.m. Please use the following guidelines when recycling your tree:
  • Trees sprayed with flocking, or artificial snow, are not accepted
  • Remove all ornaments, decorations, lights and the tree stand
  • Do not place the tree in a “tree bag”
  • Only natural trees may be recycled
Trees collected will be turned into mulch and will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Jan. 17, at 9 a.m. Please bring your own tools and storage containers for loading and transporting the mulch.
Shoal Creek Boulevard Potential Improvements – Survey Closes Jan. 13

The Austin Transportation is evaluating safety and mobility needs on Shoal Creek Boulevard from 38th St. to US 183. Resurfacing is planned for this street in 2019 as part of routine street maintenance, providing an opportunity for ATD to reassess the configuration of the street.

To better understand the needs of people using this road, the project team hosted a community listening session on Dec. 12 at Gullett Elementary School. If you were unable to make the meeting, you can review the boards, leave comments using ATD's online map, and take the Shoal Creek Boulevard survey through January 13. Visit austintexas.gov/shoalcreekblvd for more information.
Parks and Recreation Long Range Plan – Survey Closes Jan. 13

The Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) is embarking upon a long-range planning effort to guide the development and growth of Austin’s park system. PARD’s Long Range Plan for Land, Facilities and Programs (LRP) is developed every 10 years and provides a blueprint to guide land acquisition, capital improvements and the development of programs and new amenities.

The theme of this Long Range Plan will be Our Parks, Our Future 2018-2028. As part of this initiative, PARD is launching the Our Parks, Our Future Online Survey, and would is asking for your input. In this comprehensive survey, you will be able to give feedback on every aspect of the Austin Parks and Recreation System, from your local pocket or neighborhood park to the big metropolitan parks, and all of the facilities and programs in between. The survey is open through Jan. 13, 2019. For more information, or if you have questions, please contact AustinFutureParks@austintexas.gov.
Spicewood Springs Road Regional Mobility Project – Input Period Open

After holding public meetings and reviewing feedback from the community, the Austin Transportation Department (ATD) has issued a recommendation for the Spicewood Springs Road improvement project. The recommendation shown below received the most support from the community and was identified as the best option moving forward. ATD is entering the design phase, and will continue to review public input.

The input survey can be accessed by clicking the "Leave your feedback" link on the Spicewood Springs Road Regional Mobility Project page.
