Dear Neighbors,
No one should have to fear for their life or their loved ones as they attend school, celebrate a graduation, pray in their congregation, shop at the supermarket, heal patients, or otherwise go about their daily routines. Yet, this past weekend was deadly across the country, with at least 10 mass shootings that left a dozen dead and over 60 injured.
Gun violence is a public health epidemic that is hurting our country and our community. Even as we mourn after mass shootings, we must recognize that most of the time gun violence and its victims don’t make the national news. We experience its wrath as a suicide, a domestic dispute, an individual murder, or an accidental shooting of, or by, a child with access to an improperly stored gun. Each of us can work to help end the violence.
I am writing to invite you to join me, Travis County District Attorney José Garza, Travis County Judge Andy Brown, and Mayor Steve Adler for a town hall on gun violence on Wednesday, June 8, from 6-8 pm. We will hear from Austin Police Chief Chacon, survivors of gun violence, APD’s Victim Services Department, and experts on violence reduction to share resources and strategies to prevent gun violence in our communities. The town hall is cohosted by Travis County Commissioner Jeffrey W. Travillion, Travis County Attorney Delia Garza, Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez, and Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon. Please RSVP here to receive the town hall location. |
