Subject: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow!

Dear Neighbors,

Tomorrow is the first day of early voting in the Nov. 2 election. Austin voters will weigh in on two important local propositions and several state propositions. I encourage you to make a plan and get to the ballot box as soon as possible. Please note that as city officials, we are unable to use city resources to take a stance on ballot propositions, but I can take the time to provide information to help educate voters.

Early voting runs from Oct. 18-Oct. 29. You can visit VoteTravis.com to confirm your voter registration, find polling locations, see current wait times, check voter ID requirements, and more.

Proposition A is the first local ballot item, and it relates to mandated police staffing levels. Over the next five years, the estimated cost of Proposition A would be $271.5 million - $598.8 million. See the infographic below or see this one pager for more information. You can also read this memo from the City’s Chief Financial Officer related to the cost of the proposition.

I also invite you to read this Austin Chronicle article that highlights the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), which was established on my initiative, and provides examples of methods our OVP and other cities have used to interrupt violent behavior and proactively address violence in communities.

Proposition B is the second local ballot item, and it relates to parkland acquisition. You can learn more about Prop B by visiting this page or by reading the infographic below.

The League of Women Voters Austin Area also maintains a helpful and informative nonpartisan website where you can find resources including a voters guide that contains information on the state and local ballot measures.

Please take the time to do some research on the ballot items and familiarize yourself with them. Many groups in Austin have taken a stance on the ballot items and could be helpful as you make decisions.

Below, you will find two openings to serve as a District 10 commissioner. Please share these opportunities with your networks. In my next newsletter, we will recap our back-to-back Council meetings and provide additional city-related updates and information. If you have been following our work to reform the APD cadet academy, I encourage you to tune into our Council meeting on Thursday at 1 p.m. to watch the latest presentation from Kroll, the consultant responsible for evaluating the cadet academy and helping to institute much needed changes. In June, Kroll released a preliminary report that included a set of early recommendations. You can read that report here

As always, please reach out to my office if we can be of assistance at District10@austintexas.gov.

Regards,

Alison Alter

Council Member, District 10
