| Dear Neighbors,
Over the weekend, I joined thousands of Austinites in celebration of the new Central Library’s grand opening. My two teenagers and I spent hours exploring and all of us left determined to visit as often as possible. If you are like my family and think of a library a bit like a candy store, you will be amazed by this new facility and what it offers to our community.
Public libraries are one of my top priorities; they are a fantastic resource, providing countless benefits to the communities they serve. The Central Library was made possible by voters like you and I’m elated to see the final product in full operation. There are several activities and events already planned at the new library for your enjoyment. Check out upcoming events at: http://library.austintexas.gov /central and take a virtual tour here.
As always, I hope this newsletter keeps you apprised of the topics and issues that are most important to you. Regards, Alison Alter Council Member, District 10

| | Early Voting for the November Election
Don’t forget that this is the last week to vote early for the November election! Early voting runs through Friday, Nov. 3, with the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Voters in Travis County will decide whether or not to approve several constitutional amendments passed by the Texas Legislature in the 85th Legislative Session and a bond referendum for Travis County transportation and parks improvements. The ballot also includes various bond measures to fund facility improvements for your respective school district if you live within either the Austin Independent School District or the Leander Independent School District boundaries. Eanes ISD also has an item on the ballot for its residents, asking voters to weigh in on a proposed tax swap.

Thank you to the many residents who have reached out to us about the development proposal in the Great Hills area. As of now, the vote on this zoning case has been postponed until Thursday, Nov. 9. My office has organized a public meeting with the developers to hear concerns from neighbors, provide more context for the situation, and answer questions. The community meeting will be on TONIGHT, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at Great Hills Market — 9828 Great Hills Trail, Suite 550. The location is the empty space between the Lakeshore Learning Center and the Hallmark store. Please feel free to share information about the meeting with your neighbors. |

Murchison Playground Project As part of the Neighborhood Partnering Program, the North West Austin Civic Association (NWACA) Parks Committee has finalized plans to build a playground near Murchison Middle School. The proposed playground, planned in collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Department, will be at Murchison Pool Park on the corner of Far West Blvd. and Hart Lane. The Murchison Playground will feature climbing structures, free play balance logs, and spinners. As Murchison Pool is only open during the summer months, this playground will make this parkland usable year-round. NWACA’s Park Committee has set a fundraising goal to cover half of the playground costs. Although the committee is applying for grants from the Austin Parks Foundation, NWACA is also reaching out to the community for help. For more details about the playground, information on how to donate, and ways to get involved, please visit the Murchison Playground website at: https://www.murchisonplayground.com/. |
| | | Safe Routes to School Plan Launch Funded by the 2016 Mobility Bond, the Public Works Department is launching a two-year project to develop a comprehensive citywide Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Infrastructure Plan. The SRTS Infrastructure Plan will include a targeted assessment of infrastructure at each elementary and middle school in Austin. To evaluate each school over the next two years, project consultants will focus on two to three City Council Districts each semester during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years.
District 10 schools are on the list to be evaluated first. Beginning this month, engineering teams will meet with school leaders and stakeholders, and conduct walk audits each semester. These audits will evaluate safety concerns and solutions within a half mile radius of each school. Public open houses will be scheduled after the walk audits in each City Council District. Once the assessments are completed, a prioritized list of projects that improve safety and school access for Austin children will be delivered to the City. For additional information, please contact Amir Emamian, Interim Safe Routes to School Program Manager, at saferoutestoschool@austintexas.gov or by phone at (512) 974-9319.
