Subject: Austin Energy Meeting Details and ERCOT Call for Conservation

Dear Neighbors,

I have worked closely with Austin Energy (AE) to host AE-led, area-specific sessions on reliability and vegetation management in light of the frequent and sustained outages experienced by District 10. As discussed in my previous newsletter, these meetings are part of my larger efforts over the past years to clear AE’s vegetation maintenance backlog, mitigate the wildfire risk posed by trees entangled in power lines, and improve energy reliability in the district.

Information on which areas will be discussed on which dates is available below.

Austin Energy Area-Specific Meeting Information

The below maps show the areas AE will be addressing at the corresponding meetings listed. Austin Energy has prepared each meeting to be area-specific in order to most efficiently address the particulars of each area, so please review the maps and save the date for the meeting that corresponds to your home, office, or neighborhood.

Virtual meetings will be from 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. Each meeting will be recorded and made available for those interested in the meeting but unable to attend.

Below, please find the meeting link and dial-in number for each of the meetings.

If you live in one of the areas highlighted in the maps above, I hope to see you at your area's designated meeting. These areas were prioritized for the first meetings based on their level of wildfire risk. My office is committed to addressing the energy reliability issues throughout District 10, and you will hear more from me on the issue in the coming weeks and months.

Yesterday, ERCOT sent out a conservation notice asking all Texans to conserve as much energy as possible through Friday, June 18th, stating that several generation units around the state are currently offline for repairs. While ERCOT expects generation units to come back online throughout the week, they urge conservation as the state-wide grid deals with possible record electricity use. In the next section you will find AE's communication on the matter.

Regards,

Alison Alter

Council Member, District 10

ERCOT Urges Energy Conservation through June 18th

Austin Energy's communication regarding ERCOT's call for energy conservation:

"The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is asking customers to reduce their electric use as much as possible through Friday, June 18. ERCOT reported a significant number of forced generation outages, combined with potential record electric use for the month of June, has resulted in tight grid conditions. Here are some tips for Austin Energy customers to help conserve energy:

  • Set thermostat at 78 degrees or higher. Each degree lower increases your energy use by 6 to 8 percent.

  • Raise the thermostat to 85 degrees when you are away for two hours or more.

  • Point fans in your direction. Fans blowing directly on you can make it feel about 4 degrees cooler. In the summer, fan blades should move counterclockwise to push cool air downward.

  • Close shades and curtains on windows hit by direct sunlight to prevent heat from getting indoors.

  • Avoid using the oven or doing laundry during the hottest time of the day.

Austin Energy staff works year-round to maintain and monitor a diverse mix of power generation plants to ensure peak performance during extreme conditions. The utility also employs various Demand Response programs that help lower electric use during strained grid conditions, including the Power Partner Program. As we prepare for high temperatures, we encourage you to keep an eye on your energy use."
