Empires of the Cloud ... an update ...
Wednesday 24th August 2016
Hi Friend,
|
| | Yahoo Case Study Teaching Notes … This week we published the case study teaching notes for the Yahoo Case Study. They are available as a FREE download together with the case study slides and case study from the website “The Yahoo Case Study”.
In the teaching notes, we apply our Corporate Strategy Guidelines as a framework analysis for the Yahoo story from inception in 1995 to the acquisition by Verizon. The guidelines are available as a slide set from the "Dimensions of Strategy" web site. Should you have any queries, comments or questions just let me know.
The case study is designed to assist students at undergraduate and MBA level in understanding the classic corporate strategy framework and how this may be applied to a rapidly growing business in the “digital age”.
The case study is most likely to be used as a basis for broadcast teaching and plenary discussion but can also be used for small work groups dealing with individual themes. I hope you enjoy the latest case study. It has been huge fun in preparation.

| | | Apple Case Study Update … We
are currently working on the third update of our Apple Case study.
Dated 2016, the update includes the latest iPhone releases, the
development of the Apple Cloud Platform, Apple Pay and of course the
Apple Watch. Early indications for the Apple watch suggest a number of
strategic mistakes have been made! Don’t miss that! Apple is on of our
key “Empires of the Cloud”. Note : The draft has been prepared as the
script for our New York visit next month.
New York Visit and Strategy Conference … Next month, we will be in New York, filming for the IIIL International
Institute for Learning strategy conference to be released in November.
The line up includes Tom Peters In Search of Excellence and Dave
Robertson Author of the Lego book, Professor in Strategy at Wharton.
Thought leaders in Strategy, it’s a great line up. I am so pleased to be
included. Our international reputation is quite extensive thanks to the
social media coverage in the main. The Dimensions of Strategy series
and case studies, Apple, LEGO, Twitter and Yahoo, are in use around the
world.

| | The Battle for Mobile … The battle for mobile
operating systems is over according to the latest date from
Statista.com. It is a two horse race between Google Android and Apple
IOS. This battle map amongst the Empires of the Cloud appears to be
finally drawn.
Google has an 85% share leaving Apple with the
the “niche” 15% residual. Google is about to release the latest version
Nougat, as IOS updates also near release. The Apple integrated system
iPhone/IOS ensures quick penetration of the new software amongst users. The
Google Android model is dependent on third party adoption, leading to a
much slower rate of penetration amongst Android users.
The Battle for Health … Apple confirmed this week, it had acquired Gliimpse. Yes it is spelt with two (i)s! The
company specialises in the collation of health data in various forms.
Gliimpse users pull their own medical information into a single virtual
space, with the ability to add documents and pictures to develop
profile.
The best selling Apple watch is the sports watch.
Glimpse will fit well into the stable of products including ResearchKit,
HealthKit, and Carekit to enhance the sportswatch platform. The
battle for health will be hotly contested by the Empires of the cloud.
The Apple tech acquisition is clear signal in direction for the Apple
giant ...
