FOCUS ON TRAUMA

Educators are Key in Protecting Student Mental Health

Students in kindergarten through college faced a sudden transition to online learning in the spring of 2020, finding themselves abruptly disconnected from their established daily routines, support systems, and sources of security. This disruption occurred at the precipice of a year of extended isolation in the context of a devastating global pandemic and social, political, and economic unrest. Millions of students have still not returned to the classroom and new research identifies young adults as the most vulnerable group for anxiety and depression during the pandemic. Indeed, we find ourselves amid a student mental-health crisis.

Editor’s Note: Check out Mind Matters as a way to address trauma in your students.

Trends in Cohabitation Prior to Marriage

Five decades ago, living with a partner before entering marriage was rare, but today it is common. Over the last 50 years, the share of women who cohabited before marriage has risen almost sevenfold and recently reached a historic highpoint. Cohabitation prior to marriage increased from about one in ten (11%) among women who married in 1965-1974 to approaching eight in ten (76%) among women who married in the last five years (2015-2019).

Association of Age, Household Dysfunction, and Early Childhood Outcomes

In this cohort study of data on 605,344 individuals aged 19 years from Denmark, exposure to negative experiences in early adolescence was more strongly associated with later adverse outcomes than was exposure in early childhood. The findings suggest that policy interventions targeting individuals exposed to negative experiences during childhood should focus on individuals exposed to negative experiences in adolescence.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Family, Economic, and Geographic Characteristics of Black Families with Children

Black Americans’ social standing, including family structure, in the United States has been shaped by a long history of racism in laws, policies, and practices that has built racist institutions and created and exacerbated inequality. This inequality is built into the infrastructure of our country and has formed the foundation for structural racism—a system that privileges White people and results in intentional disadvantage for Black Americans. These inequalities negatively impact the lives of Black people in a number of ways.

Problematic Internet Use and Teen Depression Are Closely Linked

Most teenagers don't remember life before the internet. They have grown up in a connected world, and being online has become one of their main sources of learning, entertaining and socializing. This reality does not come risk-free. Whereas time on the internet can be informative, instructive and even pleasant, there is already significant literature on the potential harm caused by young children's problematic internet use.

The Marriage Pact

They say true love is hard to find. Whoever says that isn't an economist. You can't put a price tag on love, but dating and marriage is still a market, and economists have been thinking about how to play matchmaker more efficiently since 1962.

Using a Strategic Learning Agenda to

Drive Action and Program Success

This session offers a practical approach for using a strong, prioritized learning agenda to organize a team’s evidence-building activities and support data-driven decision-making to support program success.

A learning agenda is a set of questions that guide an organization’s evidence-building strategy and activities. It builds on an organization’s program and theory of change and strategy by prioritizing the learning questions that inform continuous improvement. Prioritization of questions and activities for a learning agenda should be aligned with organizational values, strategic objectives, developmental stage, and prior evidence level. A learning agenda is not static, and is not an end in itself. Rather, it is a means to surface evidence for decision-making.

Objectives:

Webinar participants will:

  1. Become familiar with learning agendas.

  2. Learn how to turn a learning agenda into a strategic learning plan.

  3. Understand how to use that plan to create action and inform decisions.

Presenter: Gabriel Rhoads, Managing Director of Evaluation Services, Project Evident

Who should attend: Program managers, Lead Facilitators, Nonprofit leaders, Grant Managers

When: Wednesday, April 14, 2021, 4:00 pm Eastern/1:00 pm Pacific
