HiFriend

Joint discomfort and stiffness is something that probably  affects many of us, especially as we get older. If this is you, you won't want to miss these messages.

In this series of  5 emails, I am going to talk about the causes of inflammation, and some ways to prevent it  - naturally of course, Along the way you might learn some tips and tricks that will help you.  BUT this is NOT medical advice - please consult your doctor for that......

What is inflammation?
It is the protective response by the body to something harmful. If you injure yourself in some way, your body will produce an inflammatory response. Injury can be physical, such as a cut or a burn. Other things that trigger an inflammatory response are toxins, bacteria, viruses, allergies, stress and some food (more about this later)

So this type of inflammation (called acute inflammation) only lasts a short time and is usually beneficial. Chronic inflammation which lasts for weeks, months or longer is harmful.

Most, if not all, of disease, is now thought to be connected to inflammation.

Inflammation affects the body on various other levels, including mood, brain function, and even aging. In a 2016 review published in Current Nutrition Reports, researchers at Tufts University defined aging as being “a chronic low-grade pro-inflammatory state ”

Causes of inflammation include:

Environmental toxins: including pollution, heavy metals, pesticides, moulds, chemicals cleaners, furniture fabric and rugs, and even personal hygiene products
Infection: low-level infection or viruses
Food sensitivities or allergies
Leaky gut
Hormone imbalances
A poor diet with too much sugar, salt, fat, and animal protein
Alcohol
Parasites
Medications
Genetically Modified Foods (GMOs)
Stress
Symptoms of inflammation include:
· Redness
· A swollen joint that is sometimes warm to the touch
· Joint pain or stiffness
