Subject: Delta Math Communication 2-8-2024

{{ANNOTATION "subscription_reminder" "html"}}

Good Afternoon,

Please share these updates with your staff to support their implementation of the Delta Math RtI Program.

1.  Tier 1 Math Support

2.  New Practice Screeners

3.  Math Fact Fluency Support

4.  High Impact Tutoring (Michigan Grant: 23H – Section 4)

1.  Tier 1 Math Support

  • “Screening-up” on current grade level standards in February provides pre-assessment data to inform planning additional tier 1 support within your MTSS system.

  • This data can identify unfinished learning on standards that have already been taught, as well as identify understanding of concepts before scheduled instruction.

  • Math fact fluency and fraction standards are examples of standards that probably have not yet been completely taught in tier 1 instruction.

  • To support an emotionally safe assessment environment, communicate the purpose of Delta Math screeners, and remind students that it is OK if they cannot answer all of the questions.

2.  New Practice Screeners

  • A practice screener has been available for many years to help young students become familiar with the online screening platform.

  • Last year, practice was made available for students to gain familiarity completing the online math facts for Add/Subtract to 5, Add/Subtract to 10, Add/Subtract to 20, and Multiply/Divide to 10.

  • Feedback suggests that most students find it easier to enter their answer using the digital keypad, and then advancing to the next problem using the “OK” button.

  • The element of time is included to help identify students using efficient strategies like counting on from the larger number, or using known facts to find unknown facts.  Math fact fluency researchers, Jennifer Bay-Williams and Gina Kling, suggest that students who demonstrate fluency can answer math facts correctly within 3 seconds.

  • One-on-one interviews are the best way to assess students for fluency.  But, screening groups of students using online screeners can identify students with unfinished learning efficiently.  To support an emotionally safe assessment environment, the benchmark to demonstrate fluency online is 10 or more correct answers within 90 seconds.  Students are provided an average of 9 seconds per math fact, which is 6 more seconds than time suggested by leading researchers.

  • To assign any practice screener, subscribe to the “Practice” program under AVAILABLE PROGRAMS. Then, select the “Delta Math – Practice” program to choose the practice you would like to assign.

3.  Math Fact Fluency Support

  • The Delta Math RtI Program provides a variety of activities that can be used for students to develop characteristics of fluency, that include:

    • Flexibility to use number relationships with ease in computation.

    • Efficiency to choose an appropriate, expedient strategy for a specific computation problem.

    • Accuracy to produce a correct answer.  (Parrish, 2010)

  • The Delta Math RtI Program “Fluency Overview” was recently developed to support educators in their understanding of fluency, provide lessons based on conceptual understanding, and easy access to targeted practice resources.

4.  High-Impact Tutoring  (Michigan Grant: 23H – Section 4)

  • The Delta Math RtI Program is an approved strategy in the MI Strategy Bank and is aligned to the design principles for high-impact tutoring.

  • Littera Education provides virtual interventionists trained to deliver lessons from Delta Math, either 1:1 or in small groups.  For more information, click here.

  • K-12 Connect provides academic support to K-12 learners through high-quality tutoring services, 1:1 and in small groups, virtual and in-person. For more information, click here
