Turboprop Aircraft Values Surge Amid Tight Supply

Turboprop Aircraft Values Rise Significantly

According to the latest Sandhills Global aviation market report, asking values for used turboprop aircraft saw a 4.8% increase year-over-year from December 2020 to December 2021. A primary driver behind this rise is the dwindling inventory of used turboprops, particularly in certain age groups and models. This trend follows an earlier Sandhills report that highlighted similar supply and demand dynamics within the used piston single aircraft market.

Rising Values in the Turboprop Market

The report reveals that the average asking value for used turboprop aircraft reached $1,412,023 in December 2021, up from $1,347,814 the previous year. Additionally, between November and December 2021, there was a 3.9% increase in asking prices, equating to an average rise of $53,000.

Dwindling Inventory Drives Prices

A key takeaway from the report is the significant decline in turboprop aircraft inventory. Year-over-year, inventory in this category has fallen by 56.6%. The steepest drop was observed in the 0- to 10-year-old category, which saw a 64.4% decrease. However, the 25-year-plus age group showed a more moderate decline of 52.2%.

Beechcraft King Air Series Sees Notable Value Growth

The Beechcraft King Air series has seen substantial value growth. The asking value for King Air turboprop aircraft rose by 2.8% year-over-year in December, with the King Air 200 series leading the charge. These models experienced a nearly 19% increase in value, with average asking prices jumping by $330,000, surpassing $2 million in December.

ZEVA Achieves Milestone with First Test Flight

Historic Test Flight Sets ZEVA on Path to Airborne Transportation

ZEVA, a leader in zero-emission electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, has successfully completed its first untethered, powered, and controlled flight of the full-scale ZEVA ZERO aircraft. The test, conducted in rural Pierce County, Washington, marks a significant milestone in the company's quest for FAA airworthiness certification. The test flight demonstrated the aircraft's capabilities using eight electric motor-driven propellers, all while adhering to a rigorous test program.

ZEVA’s First Flight: A New Era of Air Mobility

During the test, the uncrewed ZEVA aircraft executed four flights, totaling over four minutes of controlled hovering. The flight also included slow-speed taxiing maneuvers and limited vertical climbs. With a compact design intended for single-pilot use, the aircraft fits into a standard parking space. It is designed to cruise at speeds of up to 160 mph and has a projected range of 50 miles, making it ideal for efficient point-to-point travel.

Moving Toward Certification and Commercialization

ZEVA's successful flight test brings the company closer to achieving its ultimate goal of FAA certification. The company plans to proceed with hover flight tests and eventually transition to more complex maneuvers, such as its unique Superman-like trajectory. The ZEVA ZERO is expected to be available for pre-order with a $5,000 deposit, with first production units priced below $250,000.

A Rapidly Expanding Vision

ZEVA has made notable strides in recent years, hiring key engineers and completing more than 50 tethered flights. The company’s efforts have also been supported by collaborations with NASA, Washington State University, and its participation in the Dubai Air Show. As the company continues to refine its design and flight testing, ZEVA is on track to revolutionize personal air travel.

Boeing Chooses Collins Aerospace for B-52's Power System Upgrade

Boeing Enhances B-52 with Next-Gen Power System

As part of the U.S. Air Force’s ongoing efforts to modernize the B-52 bomber, Boeing has selected Collins Aerospace to provide an advanced electric power generation system (EPGS). This new system, derived from cutting-edge commercial technology, will replace the bomber's outdated 70-year-old power system. The upgraded EPGS will be more efficient, drawing less power from the engine, contributing to the Air Force’s goal of improving fuel efficiency by 30% and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

A More Efficient Future for the B-52

The new EPGS will feature eight generators per aircraft, ensuring redundancy in onboard electrical power. This upgrade will support future B-52 enhancements, including radar, avionics, and mission systems. By integrating proven commercial technology, the EPGS paves the way for extending the bomber's operational service life well into the 2050s.

Job Creation and Further Modernization Plans

Collins Aerospace plans to create over 60 jobs at its Electric Power Systems Center of Excellence in Rockford, Illinois, to support the B-52 EPGS program. In addition to the EPGS, Collins will provide new wheels and carbon brakes for the B-52, contributing to the broader modernization efforts. The company is actively collaborating with the Air Force and the aircraft manufacturer to explore further upgrades, including improvements in communications and avionics systems.
