Your History Is Not His Story – Toni M. Babcock

We all tend to reflect a certain story about ourselves. We’d like it to be a story of faith and hope, but sometimes we wind up playing the same old broken record over and over. Our story may have had a tumultuous beginning. There may be negative circumstances from our past that affect the story we present from day to day. In light of this, we should ask ourselves, ‘does my story lift people up and point them heavenward, or do people walk away from me thinking, “Man, it stinks to be her…” (or him)?
So, how to break out of the negative cycle? Often, the biggest struggle is letting go of our own self-loathing. I call it the “gum on shoe” syndrome. It happens when we view ourselves like that dirty wad of gum on the bottom of somebody else’s shoe — you know, that blob of sticky-icky that people just want to scrap off and avoid making further contact with.
Well, start believing you don’t belong on the bottom of somebody else’s shoe. If other people knowingly (or unknowingly) make you feel that way, look to Jesus your King, and start ministering to people who are waiting to receive the God-given gifts you have to share. It takes faith to turn off the broken record and claim who we are in Christ Jesus as sons and daughters of the King but that’s exactly what the Lord is calling us to do.
See yourself the way God sees you in Christ. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (II Corinthians 5:21 KJV).
