Most of us who have traveled to someplace we’ve never been to before, have probably experienced making a wrong turn, or taking a wrong exit onto an unknown road only to have the children ask, “when will we be there?” (Especially, before the days of a GPS.)
Our Lord’s direction for walking His path of life seems strange: ‘find the new way to live – the path to life, by being lost to the old’. It’s a paradox appearing as a contradiction. Why must I get ‘lost’ to find where I’m going? Regeneration is walking by the preeminence of God’s GPS system, His Holy Spirit, and learning to let go of the old fleshly ‘self.’ It’s recognizing the ‘Narrow path’ He has defined for us. Like salvation, the blessed life in this world is found on the narrow path of life. “Heaven can be entered only through the narrow gate! Matthew 7:13a TLB
Our growing and learning is a journey of recognizing God’s way too abundant life, to find His narrow pathway for living a blessed life. The world we are in is the ‘wide way,’ our Lord wants us to separate ourselves from the world. Learning to lose our way from the world of uncertainty around us and fully trusting God’s word and the guidance of His Spirit is a blessing far greater than being tossed and blown like sand on the seashore.
Father, teach us to discern how to lose ourselves for you, stepping onto and remaining on your ‘narrow path of joyful life!’ AMEN
