Why Then Be Downcast? - Karen Pourbabaee
“Why then be downcast? Why be discouraged?” Psalm 42:6 LBCE
Self-talk works, especially in the spiritual realm. It’s OK to question yourself and God—that opens an honest dialogue. Observe the pattern in the Psalms, where there is questioning and lament, followed by a proclamation of God’s love and faithfulness, instilling a renewed sense of hope. Don’t let your feelings dominate. Don’t believe the lies of the enemy. Don’t resign yourself to helplessness. Don’t continue the interior dialogue of discouragement. Instead, the psalmist gives us a remedy.
Remember God’s Love: “Yet, day by day the Lord also pours out His steadfast love upon me…” (Psalm 42:8) That’s a promise, so open up your heart to receive it. God’s Word is filled with professions of His love—review them.
Remember God’s faithfulness: “Faithful is He who calls you, and He will also bring it to pass.” (Hebrews 10:23 NAS) Intentionally, recall three times you know the Lord came to your aid. Meditate on those times and experience the hope arising. Assure yourself that God is with you. As you draw near to God, He will draw near to you. (James 4:8)
Speak to your soul: This verse is a great prayer, “But O my soul, don’t be discouraged. Don’t be upset. Expect God to act. For I know I shall have plenty of reason to praise Him for all that He will do. He is my help! He is my God!” (Psalm 42:11 LBCE)
Speak words of hope: The gospel is our hope. Invest in the Word in the morning and it will return to you in the middle of your nights. In the darkness of despair, you will have a hope reserve!
I will remember Your faithfulness, O God, and trust in You. I will speak to my soul words of truth and hope. I will remember Your care for me in times past. I will put my hope in You alone. When darkness sets in, help me to remember and trust until the morning light returns. Amen.
