New Year’s resolutions have become somewhat of a joke in recent years. However, the beginning of a new year is a great time to take a few moments and reevaluate how we want to use our time. Often, I hear that someone has resolved to pray more. Now that is a ‘win/win’ choice!
No one can seriously doubt the importance of prayer. Jesus thought prayer was so important, He took time to teach His disciples how to pray. He also taught the importance of prayer through example. “After He had dismissed them, He went up on a mountain by Himself to pray.” (Matthew 14:23) “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed.” (Mark 1:35) “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.” (Luke 6:12)
Hebrews 4:16 invites us to “approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Prayer is communication with God—Creator of the Universe! How could we not want to do that?
No matter where you are, you can enter His throne room. There is no set stance. The Scriptures note various postures—standing, kneeling, sitting, or lying face down.
What does prayer consist of? Prayer can be giving thanks, making confession, or interceding. And we can have confidence that the Father hears. Sometimes His answer is immediate, but sometimes we must wait, or the answer may be no. Regardless, it is to our benefit to be “faithful in prayer.” (Romans 12:12)
