While it is Still Dark Karen Pourbabaee
“On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone was removed from the tomb.” John 20:1 NAB
We all know the story of Easter morning at the tomb. A faithful Mary Magdalene left in the darkness of approaching dawn to attend to her beloved Jesus. A crushing sense of loss, perhaps hopelessness enveloped her. The gargantuan stone had been tossed aside and the grave clothes were disheveled, as if they had been quickly removed. Disciples were alerted and raced to the gravesite, later returning home to ponder this strange occurrence and come up with a new game plan. But Mary lingered…
Consider the actions of Mary Magdalene that first Easter morn. First, she ran to Jesus while it was still dark and a cloud of depression surrounded her. “…persevere in running the race that lies before us.” (Hebrews 12:1) Peter and John followed in the sprint. Destiny happened. But Mary stayed and wept outside the tomb. Wasn’t giving up. Angels came to comfort her. Then she turned to see Jesus. “…while keeping our eyes on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:2) He called her by name and she called him Rabbouni, teacher in Hebrew. He gave her instructions and she went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.” (John 20:18)
While it is still dark, run to Jesus. In depression, doubt, and despair, persevere and run the race towards Him. In anxiety, fear, and hopelessness, linger…stay and weep a bit in the search for His abiding presence. Don’t look to the world, but turn your gaze toward the Lord. Rabbouni will appear. His presence will melt your stress and plant peace in your soul. Listen, for He will teach you and instruct you in the way you should go. You, too, can go and announce, “I have seen the Lord.” Our Easters always begin in the dark. But Jesus always comes, and He is the Light of the World! Amen!
