| | | | | What God Cannot Do – Robert Schaetzle
“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” (Numbers 23:19 RSV)
This opening verse tells us right up front two things God cannot do:
1) God cannot lie! We recognize all of scripture is ‘God breathed,’ that all of scripture is not of man’s reasoning or design (2 Peter 1: 20-21 RSV). There is no infallibility or error when we come to learn of His promises.
2) God cannot break a promise! “…or has he spoken and he not fulfill it?” For sure, things impossible with men are possible with God.
3) God cannot make mistakes! “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted with evil and he himself tempts no one,” (James 1:13 RSV). We draw wrong conclusions by acting or speaking impatiently, but God cannot be tempted as we might be.
4) God cannot change—He is Always!
5) God cannot change history. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” (Hebrews 13:8 RSV). “Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots….?” (Jeremiah 13:23 RSV). God is not trendy like our culture, but constant.
6) God cannot sin or live with sin! “You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin, (1 John 3:5 RSV). Greater is He in us to keep us from stumbling.
7) God cannot stop being! “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am,’” (John 8:58 RSV). God is our promised hope.
