Well…Are You Coming? - Karen Pourbabaee
“I am the Good Shepherd, and I know mine and mine know Me.” John 10:14 NAB
One day, prompted in a Bible study to meditate on an image of Jesus as a shepherd, I saw Him clearly on a path walking ahead of me, turn partly around, and with an outstretched arm, gently question, “Well…are you coming?” That should be a turning-point moment.
He is the Good Shepherd over His people, as He is also my personal shepherd. He knows where to lead me; He knows when and how. His timing and manner are always perfect, because He knows me intimately. Why should I hesitate at the sight of His outstretched arm? If I truly believed His Word in the depths of my heart, I should leap to my feet and start walking.
A key here is believing. It’s what we all stumble on. Faith. It comes by hearing the Word of God. (Romans 10:17) So here’s the best Word for all of us who hesitate, procrastinate, perpetually ponder, saunter sluggishly—you get the picture. Psalm 23 is our great reassurance—an inspiring prayer of proclamation! Let’s experiment: Commit to reading it out loud to yourself for the next month. If faith comes by hearing the Word of God, we should expect a daily infusion.
“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not wan t. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters; He restores my soul; He leads me in right paths for His Names’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff-- they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (NRVCE)
Pray. Watch for His outstretched arm. Prepare your answer: Yes, Lord. I’m coming!
