Waiting on God - Jennifer Woodley
“But as for you, return to your God, hold fast to love and justice and wait continually for your God.” Hosea 12:6 (NRSV)
We cannot truly participate in endless waiting upon our Lord when our hearts are occupied continuously with worldly concerns. The affairs of this life, though we cannot avoid them, can quickly overtake us, so that before we know it, all our thoughts are consumed by them. Seeking first God and Kingdom soon takes second place in our daily lives.
If waiting on God is the essence of true faith, then we must entirely depend upon Him, and He must be the overarching ruler of all our thoughts and Lord of our heart’s affections. What is our heart full of? Kingdom or worldly issues? For this is what we will give our time and energy to.
If, after honest reflection, we know that God and His concerns are not at the very centre of our hearts and thoughts, then it is time to ‘return to your God', hold on firmly to the knowledge that He is love and full of justice and then ‘wait continually for our God.’
God works continually in our lives as we wait on Him in the same way. He works without intermission. As we focus on this fact, our waiting upon Him will grow and come of itself. Full of trust and joy, our daily, unconscious habit will be to ‘wait on Him all day long’ (Psalm 25:5).
‘Dear Heavenly Father, help me by the power of your Spirit to keep waiting upon you. Free my heart and mind from worldly distractions so that you remain the centre of my thinking and affections.’ Thank you.
