The Times Demand Steadfastness

“…renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:19
I’ve chosen steadfast as my “word for the year.” The practice can guide your spiritual growth and both inspire and challenge you. Steadfastness has never been more important; the times demand it. What does it mean to be steadfast? A few insights include being firm in purpose, belief, and faith; unwavering; fixed in intensity and direction. My favorite synonyms are devoted, faithful, steady, resolute, and loyal. I want to exhibit all of those things!
The concluding paragraph of Philippians 1 is subtitled Steadfastness in Faith. Paul lists the characteristics he desires for the community in Philippi. He is also, of course, speaking to the Church today. The first trait is standing firm. By His grace we can do so. Next, Paul admonishes them to struggle together for the faith of the gospel. That means all of us, no matter what denomination, or non-denomination. We must join together as a holy remnant in the Lord as more trying times approach. The true Church of Jesus must be one as He desires of us. (John 17:21)
In our stand, we must not be intimidated in any way by our opponents, whether physical or spiritual, having the power of Christ upholding us. And lastly, we are not only to believe in Him, but suffer for Him. 1 Peter 2:21 confirms that instruction: “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in His footsteps.”
Paul perfectly exemplified a steadfast spirit, living the characteristics he was calling the Church to. Like Paul, always stand firm, struggle together for the gospel, not being intimidated, and be willing to suffer for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are called to pick up our cross and follow Him.
Lord, renew a steadfast spirit within me. Amen.
