“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7 NKJVGod wants us to give our cares to him. But ever since Adam and Eve fell for Satan’s lie that God was selfish by denying them the knowledge of good and evil, we’ve asserted our independence from God, doing things in our own strength and wisdom as if we know better than him. This attitude displays our pride. It blocks God’s help and keeps us from his best for us. 1 Peter 5:5 NLT, warns us that, “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.” In his commentary on 1 Peter 5, Matthew Henry says, “These [cares] are burdensome, and often very sinful, when they arise from unbelief and distrust, when they torture and distract the mind, unfit us for duties, and hinder our delight in the service of God.” Humility enables us to realize our inadequacy and to trust God with our cares. The New King James Version of the Bible renders 1 Peter 5:7 as, “casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” The Greek word for “cast” is epiripto, which means to “throw something with great force.” We give our cares to God with firm determination to leave them with him as we trust that in his power, love, grace, and wisdom, he will meet all our needs. And we must stand strong in that trust and remain alert, for Satan our “great enemy” is all too ready to tempt us back into depending on ourselves and binding us with shackles of control, fear, and worry. 1 Peter 5:6-7 Yet even if we stumble in our trust, God is ever ready, waiting for us to turn our troubles back over to him so he can delight in lovingly meeting our needs and strengthening us in our trials.
