The Doorstep of Heaven - Karen Pourbabaee
“To the one who knocks, the door will be opened…” Mathew 7:8 NAB
We have a loving Father who waits longingly for the thumping sound of our knock. He strains His ear in anticipation of even a timid tap. To knock is to strike a door to gain admittance. By the time we are knocking at the door of a friend, we have anticipated the warm reunion and thought of all the things we plan to talk about and do together. Knocking is both a final and definitive action on our part as we await the door opening.
We knock at the door of heaven with our prayers. Many thoughts and actions, even tears, have probably come first, but when we pray, it’s our final and definitive action. We’ve brought it all to the doorstep of heaven. It’s now real business. So, we knock. We want admittance to the King. The warm embrace of our Loving Father. The ear of our True Friend. Home.
To the one who knocks, it is promised that the door will be opened. This promise is part of an expansive one: “For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Mathew 7:8) Why a tri-part declaration on prayer? Is it merely three different ways to express the same thing? Yes, it is!
Another interpretation follows. Asking involves our verbal petition, our body. Seeking elicits our mind and thought, our soul. If knocking at heaven’s door is prayer (communication), this becomes our spirit’s contact with the Divine. A heavenly visit. Thus, prayer involves every part of us—spirit, soul, and body. We bring it all to our heavenly chat.
He is waiting to open the door of heaven. What have you brought to heaven’s doorstep? Knock! The door will be opened! Amen.
