The Autumn Rains – Toni M. Babcock
As we age many will suffer physical trials we didn’t see coming in life, and like paddlers tossed into a threatening rapid, we will need to ride out the waves until we reach the safety of the shore. This could be a return to health and normalcy, or it could mean a ‘new normal’ that involves chronic pain, reduced quality of life, or a disabling condition.
You might call it a part of the autumn rain that comes before entering the winter of our lives. So how do we receive the rain when we were only hoping for sunshine? We can believe the Lord will turn the rain into a blessing if we allow it.
I have a dear friend in the autumn of life who is currently battling a serious health crisis. Tossed into the rapids’ unexpectedly and not knowing what’s lies downstream, she clings to Jesus in the water and gives God all the glory. I hope to do the same, no matter what the future holds.
In the Psalms we read of those who find their strength in the Lord. “As they pass through the Valley of Baca, [Valley of Tears], they make it a source of spring-water; even the autumn rain will cover it with blessings. They go from strength to strength; each appears before God in Zion,” Psalms 84:6-7 CSB.
May we make our ‘Valley of Tears’ a source of water – flowing to us through the power of the Holy Spirit as Jesus promised, “The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” John 7:38 CSB
