“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.” Romans 8:5 RSV Many times, when something is heavy on our minds, and we might ponder… “Is this what you want me to do Lord… or is this my own reasoning?” If we want to be intellectually honest with ourselves and seek to put God first, this kind of question will cross our mind often—especially when it’s concerning our heart’s desire to want our Lord’s direction over something we feel is important. I’ve learned over the years, that my tasks at work (more often than not) find a greater assurance of God’s leading when I dedicate each new day to our Lord. My thoughts recognize Him searching my heart, so learning to bring everything to God before I act gives me a spiritual understanding that I might not have if I hadn’t brought everything to Him. For sure, learning to discern things spiritually is everyone’s growing and learning experience. God’s Holy Spirit abides in each one who wears his Name. Those followers who want to follow His leading are challenged every day to recognize His Spirit’s prompting. It truly is a blessing to recognize our Lord’s instruction by way of His spiritual prompting. I’ve said often in my pastoral ministering that ‘in order to get to know someone, you must spend time with that person. The way we get to know our Lord better is spending time with Him in His Word.’ Likewise, learning to recognize His Holy Spirit’s prompting is being slow to act, and quick to listen.
