“I wait for you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.” Psalm 25:1 NAB
In secular arenas, the lifting up of hands is a visible physical act of surrender to authority. The invisible spiritual act of surrender to the Lord is the lifting up of our souls. God’s blessings and protection are dependent on such surrender. We must wait for the Lord and lift up our souls to enter surrender mode.
Psalm 25:2, “In You, I trust; do not let me be disgraced,” lists the next step as trust. Psalm 37 also advises us to trust in the Lord and not to depend on our own understanding or knowledge. All wisdom belongs to God; we are to trust in that. And then, as stated in verses 15 and 21, wait again!
Psalm 25 mentions waiting on the Lord three times, so stop scurrying around, be still, and wait on Him. Verse 15, “My eyes are ever on the Lord…” tells us where our focus should be. Are your eyes on the Lord or do you look within yourself, depending on your own human and limited abilities? Do you look for ways to “fix it” rather than looking to our mighty and powerful God? Remind yourself that in all circumstances, in all trials, challenges, times of doubt, sorrow, and distress, stop and follow this pattern: Wait. Lift. Trust. Wait.
A perusal of Psalm 25 itemizes all the blessings and benefits of following this pattern: He makes known to you His ways and teaches you His paths. He guides you in truth. You will live well and prosper, and your descendants will inherit the land. The counsel of the Lord belongs to you. He will free your foot from the snare, relieve the troubles of your heart, and bring you out of distress. To that, He will also put an end to affliction and suffering, and take away all your sins. He intends to preserve your life and rescue you. Enter the surrender mode: Wait, lift, trust, and wait again!
