“Standing on the Promises of God”
Sandra Fischer
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God. ~ 2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
An old-time hymn, “Standing on the Promises of God,” illustrates how God’s Word gives assurances to guide and guard every believer’s life. Depending on the publisher and Bible version, an estimated three to seven thousand promises exist in the Bible. The hymn-writer knew how God’s Word is a strong faith foundation, but how can we stand on the promises if we don’t know them?
The writer of Psalm 119 reveals how God’s Word undergirded him with hope, truth, and protection. Of the 176 verses of the psalm, all but five include references to various synonyms for the scriptures, illustrating the importance and power of knowing them. The writer declares his promise to the LORD while acknowledging God’s promise, “The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words. I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise." (Psalm 119:57-58) ESV
God’s promises are powerful. They are treasures present in every book of the Bible. If we “dig” enough and “mine” them like gold, we will enjoy wealth beyond measure, keeping them as heavenly treasure in our hearts. Here are three mighty ones: God assures us He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 5:13); He has given us eternal life through Christ’s death and resurrection; (John 3:16), and nothing can separate us from His love. (Romans 8:38-39) ESV
Even if we learn just a few promises, we will form a foundation on which we can sing with full knowledge: “Standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of God!”
Yes, and amen in Christ.
