Sabbath Keeping – Jennifer Woodley

“Remember the sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work. But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God;” Exodus 20:8 (NRSV)

There is just one day in our week that God commands us to lay aside our labour, our striving and all that distracts us from Him. Yet, on the Sabbath, we are so easily deceived into putting everything else the world has on offer before God. God wisely gave us one day to rest, be replenished and do as little as possible so that our soul and body might be refreshed. The sabbath is God’s Day to keep God’s people holy for Him.

Rather than formulate a list of do’s and don’ts on the Sabbath, we ought to examine what is the true intention of our heart on this day. It is a day to re-orientate our activities so that the Lord becomes the main focus? Or is it a day to complete the list of jobs we didn’t get to during the week? Is God the main focus or just an aside thought for a little while? Are we delighting in what we can achieve, or delighting in the Lord? Our actions on the sabbath must indicate that we desire to move closer to the Lord and to rest in Him. Let’s honestly ask ourselves what is our deepest desire on this day.

As God’s holy people we should obey the doctrine of sabbath keeping, discipline ourselves to set aside what is not restful and pleasing to God, find our delight in the Lord’s presence on the sabbath and above all, desire the Lord more than anything else.
