Jesus is found doing something scandalous. He has healed a man who could not lower himself quick enough into the healing waters at the pool of Beth-zatha, in Jerusalem. It was the Sabbath and work, even compassionate work, was forbidden.
When we act from a compassionate and caring heart, our behavior will not make sense to others. We will look to be overstepping boundaries, acting unnecessarily, in short, we will be a rule-breaker. Jesus never stuck to following protocol. In fact, He was often caught out by those who set the ‘right’ example by sticking to the rules.
Compassionate hearts care little about what others think. Sincere love offered to another is ready to take risks so that others my come to know Christ.
Are we eager to do good regardless of what others may say? Jesus cared more for a man who had been sick for 38 years than he did for the rule of doing no work on the Sabbath. Compassion won the day. Compassion is the new rule. May our hearts, full of compassion, determine how we will behave towards others. Let’s not walk on by. Where can we stop to show compassion to those in our world today?
