ROOTS GROW DEEP ABIDING IN GOD’S VINE Robert Schaetzle
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. John 15:4 ESV Many years ago, we facilitated a home bible study from the Navigators 2:7 series. The discipleship course was taken from Colossians 2:7 with the theme being ‘Built-up in faith, being rooted in Christ.’ As with our Lord’s admonition to ‘abide’ given in John 15, learning to abide ‘in Jesus’ is a growing and learning process. Abiding and growing in Christ requires ‘living water,’ but my purpose is to recognize our responsibility to stay ‘rooted’ in the proper soil in order to bear fruit others will desire. To bear fruit that is nutritional and delicious and worthy of God’s honor, we must remain rooted in Christ alone for our redemption. This is what brings genuine purpose and allows his preeminence to prevail. For sure, we need His ‘living water’ too, that won’t evaporate when the pressures of life challenge our faith. I know I must remain firmly attached to Christ as my Vine, taking time to learn and to recognize His Holy Spirit, as our Lord daily intercedes for me at the Father’s right hand. By doing so, I’m not tempted to wander off into fearfulness because of things happening all around me. My heart keeps looking to things above, so it isn’t tempted to become overwhelmed by the flood of godlessness in the world. Father, I thank you for planting me in soil that will bear wholesome fruit, worthy of your honor. May I always live by faith, being rooted in the vine of my Lord Jesus, against the pestilence and parasites that want to destroy the fruit I bear for you… through the vine of my Savior Jesus.
