“No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide a way out so that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 CSB)
Would you allow a temptation to cross your mind—a thought that takes a nanosecond’s imagination so you can test your sincerity to ‘rebuke the devil’ and get on with godliness? Sound crazy? Not if you consider some folks of a weak and tender conscience who unwittingly wrestle with this kind of exercise in order to test themselves — then chastise themselves for not taking action quick enough. It’s a destructive errand the devil sends us on. Imagine picking up a rotting corpse and carrying it on your back just to see if it will make you stink. Here’s the answer: Yes, it will make you stink, and no, there is no reason to test this theory. Flesh is flesh—nothing good to see here—so stop looking. God doesn’t tempt anyone with evil, so why should we? (James 1:13 KJV)
Here’s the thing. We can blame the devil for every unwanted thought that crashes into our heads and play the victim, or we can take ownership of our victory in Christ and refuse to park anywhere near the ‘dead corpse’— keeping our eyes on Jesus, putting off the ‘old man’ and putting on the new. (Romans 13:14 CSB)
“Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things. Do what you have learned and received and heard from me, and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9 CSB).
