Recently we were with a group of friends, and the conversation turned to Jesus’ Second Coming. Comments were made speculating how recent headlines surely pointed to the soon return of Christ. Among the group, a fellow named Rob spoke up, “Oh, I’ve heard that all my life.”
How should we as believers answer such expressions of doubt? Granted, it has been two thousand years, but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. God wants us to live expecting Christ’s soon return. The Apostle Paul encouraged Titus to teach sound doctrine “while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ…” (Titus 2:13 NIV). And, he reassured the Thessalonians, “the Lord himself will come down from heaven…and the dead in Christ will rise first…then we who are still alive will be caught up together with them…and so we will be with the Lord forever.” He finishes by saying, “Therefore, encourage each other with these words,” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 NIV).
We recently celebrated another Christmas Season—remembering the first coming of Jesus to earth. The event fulfilled more than three hundred Old Testament prophesies. Because He came the first time, we have hope that He will come a second time.
A main theme of end-times prophesies is the promise of Christ’s reign over the earth. He has to come back in order to rule and reign. Revelation 11:15 proclaims, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…and He will reign forever and ever.” Only God knows that date. But because the First Advent of Christ took place just as predicted, we can be sure the Second Advent of Christ will take place as well.
“Jesus, please help my faith to remain strong as I wait for your glorious appearing. Help me to be quick to encourage others, also, to be faithful. Amen.”
