| | | | | Just Survive? - Marlene Custer
“Thrive? I’m just trying to survive!” I have heard this sentiment several times recently. The uncertainties of the past two years have definitely contributed to this feeling. Many have seen the loss of loved ones, the loss of businesses, as well as the loss of income. And we’re finding the loss of social interaction is also taking a toll. In many cases, not being sure of the information we are receiving has resulted in fear and frustration.
What does Scripture say about times like this? I think one thing is clear—we are to do more than just survive; Jesus wants us to thrive! The Apostle John records Jesus’ purpose in coming to Earth, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full,” (John 10:10 NIV). That sounds like more than mere surviving to me.
I have watched loving parents with their children. Are they content to see their children just survive? No, they want to see them thrive—they want to see them grow and develop well, prosper, and flourish. And I think God wants that for His children as well! This belief is backed up by many verses from Scripture. Paul’s letter to the Romans speaks of “God’s abundant provision of grace,” (Romans 5:17 NIV), and Jude greets believers with the blessing, “Mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance,” (Jude 1:2 NIV).
I implore you, search the Scriptures and call upon Christ’s name. Ask for His joy and peace. Along with the Apostle Paul, I pray, ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope…’ (Romans 15:13 NIV).
Father, may those who are just surviving grow, prosper, and flourish—may they thrive! Amen!”
